What is a combination tricast bet

In a 'Combination Tricast' you are attempting to successfully pick the 1-2-3 in a specified race, but the three selections you have picked can finish in any order, just as long as they all occupy a position within the first three places in the race.

A combination tricast bet is a complicated kind of bet that is accessible to newcomers but best suited to bettors who have a clear understanding of the field they are betting on and the participants who are competing in it. The bet is very similar to a tricast bet (which is sometimes referred to as a trifecta) and it allows three horses involved in the field to be selected by the bettor.

However, there is one major difference in that a tricast bet is very strict in how it operates: there is one and only one way for the bettor to win. The selections must finish in the order the bettor has stipulated; if they finish in a different order – even if they are all within the top three – the bet is lost and no return is made. A combination tricast, on the other hand, allows for more options, and in that sense blends the tricast bet with the combination forecast bet.

Tricast bets are attractive for bettors who are bold enough to take them on because they can result in very high rewards for a relatively small stake. As mentioned, they are slightly more simple than typical tricast bets, but still very difficult as, for the bettor to have a good chance of winning, he or she needs to have a very high knowledge of the field that is being bet upon. Those who are new to betting or inexperienced in the field they are considering betting upon may not find much luck with a combination tricast bet.

Combination tricast bet

Combination tricast bets allow the bettor to select three runners. They are typically operated in horse racing and greyhound racing and invite the bettor to make three selections that they believe will finish in the top three. For example, in a horse race, the bettor might select Horse 1, Horse 5 and Horse 6 to finish in the top three.

This is a difficult prediction for many people to make, but it is made easier in a combination tricast bet because the bettor does not have to give the exact order that these horses will finish in. They can finish in any order and to cover this variety of options, a combination tricast bet is not just one single bet. Instead, it is six bets that cover all potential outcomes. In this case, the six bets would be as follows:

  • The first bet is placed upon Horse 1 to finish in first place, Horse 5 to finish in second place and Horse 6 to finish in third place
  • The second bet is placed upon Horse 1 to finish in first place, Horse 6 to finish in second place and Horse 5 to finish in third place
  • The third bet is placed upon Horse 5 to finish in first place, Horse 1 to finish in second place and Horse 6 to finish in third place
  • The fourth bet is placed upon Horse 5 to finish in first place, Horse 6 to finish in second place and Horse 1 to finish in third place
  • The fifth bet is placed upon Horse 6 to finish in first place, Horse 5 to finish in second place and Horse 1 to finish in third place
  • The sixth and final bet is placed upon Horse 6 to finish in first place, Horse 1 to finish in second place and Horse 5 to finish in third place

There are six bets being made in this scenario, so for those bets to be covered, the stake is higher than it ordinarily would be if a regular bet were being had. In this case, it is six times higher, with another stake of equal value being placed on each bet. In other words, this means that a £10 stake would be in fact a £60 because that original £10 is being multipled six times over to cover each bet.

When placing a combination tricast bet, it is important to take note of the number of runners in the race. If, for example, a race has 10 horses running, it would likely have very high odds, and be very good for any bettors bold enough to try. This is because the more horses that are running, the harder it is for a bettor to make a correct prediction. On the other hand, if a race had just seven horses there would likely be a much lower number of potential outcomes, making it easier for the bettor to make a correct prediction. The payout for a winner would therefore be much less.

Another important thing to remember when placing a tricast bet is that in most scenarios bettors will not know what they stand to win before they place the bet. In many cases, combination tricast payouts are determined by a computer algorithm that is only formulated after the race has been run. It is only then that the bettor will know exactly how much they have won.

In some scenarios, one of the selections in a combination tricast bet could be declared a non-runner, not take part in the race and therefore have no chance of placing within the top three. If this happens, the bet is likely to still be intact, but the terms that it was made under would possibly change. There are other terms and conditions that are applicable to combined tricast bets in scenarios like this, so it is very important that anyone looking to place a bet check with their bookmaker to truly get to know the consequences of all possible outcomes before betting.

Combination tricast bets are a useful bet for anyone looking to expand their betting endeavours but not quite knowledgeable enough to feel confident within the stricter confines of a traditional tricast bet. It is still important for anyone placing this kind of a bet to have a good knowledge of the sport and field they are betting upon, as bad decisions can lead to lost stakes, but there are fail safes involved that mean that even if the result is not quite as the bettor predicted, a return can still be secured.
