King George VI Chase

The King George VI Chase, which was first run in 1937, is a Grade 1 steeplechase over three miles which is open to horses aged four and older. It is traditionally held on Boxing Day at Kempton Park, though it is occasionally switched in either date or venue due to abandonments caused by poor weather. Some of the biggest names in racing have won this race including Arkle, Timeform’s highest rated steeplechaser, and the Paul Nicholls-trained Kauto Star, who won this race five times in six years between 2006 and 2011.

The King George is also the second leg of Jump racing’s Triple Crown, which begins with the Betfair Chase at Haydock, and concludes with the Cheltenham Gold Cup. On ten occasions, horses have achieved the King George/Cheltenham Gold Cup double in the same season: Cottage Rake (1948/49), Limber Hill (1955/56), Saffron Tartan (1960/61), Arkle (1965/66), Desert Orchid (1988/89), Best Mate (2002/03), Kicking King (2004/05), Kauto Star (2006/07, 2008/09), Long Run (2010/11).
