This historic event was first raced way back in 1860 replacing the Royal Stand Plate after bad weather meant a 2 mile race couldn’t be run on the Ascot course so it was shortened to 5 furlongs. Formerly known as the Queen’s Stand Plate it was renamed after King Edward VII following Queen Victoria’s death.
It’s a Group 1 flat race open to three year olds or older and has been part of the Global Sprint Challenge since 2005, attracting many quality overseas entries.
Lester Piggott holds the record for most jockey wins with seven (1957, 1963, 1971, 1973, 1977, 1978 and 1985) whilst Vincent O’Brien is the most successful trainer after training five horses to victory (1962, 1973, 1977, 1978 and 1987).
