A second Group 1 opportunity for older milers before they have to face the classic generation, and it attracted quite a few that had contested the first, the Lockinge, with 6 of the first 7 from that contest in the line-up and the winner Modern Games sent off favourite, his main threat on paper Inspiral, who had missed her intended run at Newbury; Inspiral got the better of those that had run in the Lockinge, but an unconsidered but unexposed runner, also having his first run of the year, narrowly got the better of her, the pair finishing clear, clear grounds for considering the winner much improved, his performance not in the class of last year's winner Baaeed, but up to standard for the race; the field essentially raced as one group, middle to far side, the pace a sound one, offering no real advantage to those ridden prominently or held up; the stewards enquired into interference between the fifth and seventh 2f out, the rider of the fifth suspended for 2 days for careless riding, though the placings weren't amended, despite prize money being involved, that the fifth had improved his placing over the seventh as a result of the interference beyond doubt.
