The event was established in 1890, and was named after the ninth Earl of Coventry, who served as the Master of the Buckhounds at that time.
The race was initially installed at Group 3 status, but was upgraded to a Group 2 in 2004, where the John Gosden-trained Iceman, ridden by Kieren Fallon prevailed.
The Coventry Stakes sees the leading two-year-olds from the UK and Ireland line up in what is usually an ultra-competitive contest and has a habit of throwing up a star of the future, with the likes of Canford Cliffs (2009), Dawn Approach (2012) and Caravaggio (2016) all winning the race this century.
For decades, the winner of this race has been regarded as one of the leading two-year-olds and it's not a shock to see them competing in Classic company the following season, most likely to feature in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket. Dawn Approach was the last horse to complete the double, while Canford Cliffs emulated Henrythenavigator by landing the Irish equivalent, providing jockey Richard Hughes with a first Classic success.
