The race is a Class 2 Handicap contest which is run over a distance of one mile, and is open to fillies aged three years. Prior to 2018 it was run as a Listed handicap but was downgraded by the British Horseracing Authority to comply with a new rule that no handicap race could carry Listed or Group race status.
The 2018 renewal was won by the Ed Walker-trained Agrotera, who took the race by a distance of 2 ¾ lengths, under a trademark hold-up ride from jockey Jamie Spencer.
Frankie Dettori has claimed the most victories in the saddle in the Sandringham Stakes, having achieved seven wins in the Royal Ascot contest: Palana (1994), Cask (1995), Brave Kris (1997), Independence (2001), Hold To Ransom (2003), Osaila (2015) and Persuasive (2016).
