Duke of Edinburgh Stakes 2022 Racecard

The Duke of Edinburgh Stakes is a Flat horse race run every year on the fourth day (Friday) of the Royal Ascot meeting.

3:40 Fri 17 Jun DUKE OF EDINBURGH STAKES

Distance: 11f 211y Age: 3yo + Prize: £51,540 Going: Good to Firm

Analyst's Verdict

CANDLEFORD made light work of Coltrane when scoring at Kempton 7 months ago and, despite being off the track since, he's worth a chance to defy a 6 lb rise. Just Fine is a big danger on the back of a highly encouraging return, while the hat-trick seeking Contact warrants plenty of respect along with several others in a typically hot renewal.

J: Shane Foley
T: Mrs J. Harrington, Ireland

10-0
Fairly useful bumper winner who was progressive on the Flat last season, making it 3 from 4 when landing a competitive handicap at Leopardstown 9 months ago. Subsequent absence a slight concern, though.
2
jockey silks 2. CHICHESTER
J: Richard Kingscote
T: Keith Dalgleish
5
9-10
Useful sort who was a good third ti Living Legend in a listed event at Kempton on return and wasn't discredited in the Earl of Sefton Stakes at Newmarket a couple of months ago. Others have more in hand.
3
jockey silks 3. MASHHOOR
J: Ben Martin Coen
T: John Patrick Murtagh, Ireland
4
9-6
Shaped well on first run since leaving Sir Michael Stoute when creditable fourth of 17 in handicap at Cork and confirmed that encouragement when landing a 19-runner event at the Curragh last time. Big player.
4
jockey silks 4. KENZAI WARRIOR (USA)
J: Jack Mitchell
T: Roger Teal
5
9-6
Good effort when second of 3 in a minor event at Wolverhampton 5 months ago. He doesn't have much in hand, though, and he's hard to catch right as a rule.
5
jockey silks 5. CAP FRANCAIS
J: David Probert
T: Ian Williams
6
9-5
Freshened up by a break when landing 9-runner handicap at Newmarket in April and backed it up with a cracking effort in second at Chester. Latest effort at Epsom was underwhelming, though.
6
jockey silks 6. TRAWLERMAN (IRE)
J: Frankie Dettori
T: John & Thady Gosden
4
9-5
Good looker who is lightly raced for his age and returned with a career-best to land an 8-runner event at Chelmsford a couple of months ago, doing well in the circumstances. That form is solid and a big effort is on the cards.
7
jockey silks 7. KELLY'S DINO (FR)
J: Clifford Lee
T: K. R. Burke
9
9-4
One-time smart performer who, back from 2 years off the track, seemed badly in need of the run at Haydock recently. Seems to retain some ability, but this is a big ask.
8
jockey silks 8. JUST FINE (IRE)
J: Ryan Moore
T: Sir Michael Stoute
4
9-4
Rangy gelding who has been handled patiently by his expert trainer and shaped well when a staying-on third at York last month. Scope to do better still, and well-run race will suit him down to the ground. Leading claims.
9
jockey silks 9. MOKTASAAB
J: Callum Shepherd
T: William Knight
4
9-4
Has thrived since joining this stable and made it two from two for the season with another comfortable success at Goodwood in April. Didn't get a clear run when sixth at Epsom last time, so very much remains of interest.
10
jockey silks 10. STAY WELL
J: James Doyle
T: Hughie Morrison
4
9-4
Straightforward sort who has posted a couple of excellent in second this season, again travelling smoothly at Redcar last time. Should be well positioned, so likely to be in the shake-up.
11
jockey silks 11. BRILLIANT LIGHT
J: Daniel Tudhope
T: Saeed bin Suroor
5
9-3
Useful performer who was back to his best when landing an 8-runner handicap at Ripon a month ago. This is clearly much tougher, though.
12
jockey silks 12. LONGBOURN (IRE)
J: J. M. Sheridan
T: Ross O'Sullivan, Ireland
6
9-3
Likeable front runner who returned with a cracking effort when second over 1m at Naas a month ago. Should give his all back up in trip, but he's likely to face pressure for the lead.
13
jockey silks 13. CONTACT (IRE)
J: Ben Curtis
T: David & Nicola Barron
4
9-3
Progressive 4-y-o who has scored the last twice, having plenty in hand at Haydock in May. Strong-travelling style will lend itself to a race like this, so he's very much one to consider.
14
jockey silks 14. GOLD MAZE
J: Saffie Osborne
T: Jamie Osborne
5
9-2
Useful performer in Ireland a couple of seasons back, but struggled in two starts for Roger Varian last year. Step back in right direction when fifth behind Juan de Montalban on return/debut for new yard over C&D and he's one to keep an eye on.
15
jockey silks 15. SIR RUMI (IRE)
J: Rossa Ryan
T: Richard Hannon
4
9-0
Good second in conditions event at Doncaster on reappearance and similar form back in handicap company since. Should give his running again, but others look better treated.
16
jockey silks 16. CEMHAAN
J: Pat Cosgrave
T: George Baker
5
8-13
Better than ever this term, winning both starts and having a bit to spare at Newmarket 47 days ago. Presumably primed for this, so big run can't be ruled out.
17
jockey silks 17. CANDLEFORD (IRE)
J: Tom Marquand
T: William Haggas
4
8-12
Progressive throughout last year and looked streets ahead of the handicapper when scoring in a 6-runner handicap at Kempton 7 months ago. That form is strong (runner-up won here earlier in the week) and he should be ready to go.
18
jockey silks 18. STATE OF BLISS (IRE)
J: Joe Fanning
T: Charlie & Mark Johnston
4
8-12
Found some improvement and capitalised on drop in weights to score at Ripon (12f) in April but hasn't fired since. Unlikely to feature.
19
jockey silks 19. AJERO (IRE)
J: David Egan
T: Kim Bailey
7
8-10
Useful hurdles winner who has started positively on the Flat, runner-up on each of his 3 outings and finishing with running left at Chepstow 3 weeks ago. Interesting handicap debutant.

Betting Forecast : 7/1 7 JUST FINE, 15/2 7.5 CANDLEFORD, 9/1 9 TRAWLERMAN, 12/1 12 CONTACT, 12/1 12 MASHHOOR, 12/1 12 MOKTASAAB, 16/1 16 STAY WELL, 18/1 18 LONGBOURN, 18/1 18 EVER PRESENT, 20/1 20 CEMHAAN, 22/1 22 BRILLIANT LIGHT, 25/1 25 SIR RUMI, 28/1 28 GOLD MAZE, 28/1 28 AJERO, 33/1 33 CAP FRANCAIS, 50/1 50 CHICHESTER, 50/1 50 STATE OF BLISS, 66/1 66 KENZAI WARRIOR, 80/1 80 KELLY's DINO
