Queen Alexandra Stakes 2022 Racecard

The Queen Alexandra Stakes is a Flat horse race run every year on the final day (Saturday) of Royal Ascot.

6:10 Sat 18 Jun QUEEN ALEXANDRA STAKES

Distance: 21f 143y Age: 4yo + Prize: £54,000 Going: Good to Firm

Analyst's Verdict

FALCON EIGHT disappointed in this race 12 months ago but had a clear excuse given the ground and, having shaped well from an unpromising position in the Chester Cup last time (form franked earlier this week), he could be the way to go. Wordsworth boasts smart form too and is an interesting contender on his first try at an extreme distance. Trueshan sets the standard but it bears repeating he's still be to tried on ground firmer than good.

J: Hollie Doyle
T: Alan King

10-0
Established himself as the best stayer in Europe last year, winning Goodwood Cup, Cadran at Longchamp and Long Distance Cup here. Took Nottingham listed race on return. Has the best form but his trainer has stated he's unlikely to run if ground stays good to firm.

jockey silks 2. EARLOFTHECOTSWOLDS (FR)
J: Non Runner
T: Nigel Twiston-Davies
8
9-10
Useful hurdler who has translated all that ability to the Flat, completing an AW hat-trick when landing a valuable 2m conditions event at Newcastle on Good Friday. Not discounted on that evidence but last of 9 to Kyprios in Gold Cup at this course (20f, good to firm, 40/1) on Thursday. NON RUNNER.

J: William Buick
T: W. P. Mullins, Ireland
9
9-7
Showed deep stamina reserves to come out on top in this race 12 months ago but hasn't hit the same heights in this code since, running poorly after 4 months off at the Curragh last time. Wouldn't be a complete shock if he bounced back but others look more solid.

jockey silks 4. CALLING THE WIND (IRE)
J: David Egan
T: Richard Hughes
6
9-4
Smart and consistent gelding who posted some excellent efforts in 2021, including when runner-up in this corresponding event. Respectable efforts both starts back this season and will benefit from this return to further. Solid each-way contender.
5
jockey silks 5. FALCON EIGHT (IRE)
J: Tom Marquand
T: D. K. Weld, Ireland
7
9-4
Smart gelding who swept through from off the pace to land the Chester Cup in good style in 2021. Far from disgraced off a 5 lb higher mark in latest renewal of that race and, with that form franked earlier this week, he has to be considered a big player.
6
jockey silks 6. HIGHWAY COMPANION (IRE)
J: Callum Rodriguez
T: Keith Dalgleish
8
9-4
Fairly useful jumper who added to his tally at Perth in May but set a very stiff task on Flat debut.
7
jockey silks 7. MASTER MILLINER (IRE)
J: Sean Levey
T: Emma Lavelle
6
9-4
Useful gelding. Six wins from 19 Flat runs and bounced back to something like his best when second in 7-runner handicap at York (16.2f, good) 37 days ago, staying on well. Shapes as if he'll stay beyond 2m but this is a big ask.
8
jockey silks 8. NATE THE GREAT
J: Hollie Doyle
T: Andrew Balding
6
9-4
Looked better than ever when a wide-margin winner of a 6-runner Newmarket handicap in May. Even better form when second in Henry II Stakes at Sandown (16.2f) 23 days ago, though was well positioned. Fourth in this contest 2 years ago but he's still to prove he's an out-and-out stayer.
9
jockey silks 9. RESHOUN (FR)
J: Richard Kingscote
T: Ian Williams
8
9-4
Useful gelding who landed Ascot Stakes in 2021. Not seen to best effect in latest renewal of that race but faces a stiffer task on these terms.
10
jockey silks 10. TIMOUR (FR)
J: James McDonald
T: A. Fabre, France
4
9-3
Useful colt who won 10.4f maiden at Saint-Cloud in 2021 and in frame numerous times since. Upped significantly in trip.
11
jockey silks 11. WORDSWORTH (IRE)
J: Ryan Moore
T: Aidan O'Brien, Ireland
4
9-3
Smart colt who made a winning reappearance for the second successive year in minor event at Gowran in April. Ran well in the Sagaro Stakes here next time and then clearly unsuited by the drop in trip at the Curragh (12f) 4 weeks ago. Has to be respected on his first go at an extreme distance.
12
jockey silks 12. DINARD ROSE (IRE)
J: A. J. Slattery
T: Nina Walsh, Ireland
6
8-13
Fairly useful mare. Entitled to step up on her reappearance at the Curragh (14f)) 29 days ago but is flying too high in this grade.
13
jockey silks 13. SINGLE (IRE)
J: Rob Hornby
T: Mick Channon
5
8-13
Fairly useful mare who stepped up on her reappearance run when fourth in 2m Goodwood handicap 13 days ago but is firmly up against it on these terms.
14
jockey silks 14. URBAN ARTIST
J: P. J. McDonald
T: Hughie Morrison
7
8-13
Useful mare who ran very close to her best after 7 months off when 1¼ lengths second of 6 in Bronte Cup at York (13.8f, good to soft) 28 days ago, staying on. Holds solid each-way claims if seeing out this much longer trip.

Betting Forecast : 2/1 2 TRUESHAN, 9/2 4.5 WORDSWORTH, 6/1 6 FALCON EIGHT, 12/1 12 NATE THE GREAT, 14/1 14 URBAN ARTIST, 16/1 16 CALLING THE WIND, 18/1 18 STRATUM, 28/1 28 RESHOUN, 33/1 33 TIMOUR, 50/1 50 MASTER MILLINER, 125/1 125 HIGHWAY COMPANION, 150/1 150 SINGLE, 200/1 200 DINARD ROSE

The race is open to horses aged four years or older and is run over a distance of 2 miles, 5 furlongs and 143 yards.

The race is named after Queen Alexandra and was established in 1864, originally under the name of the Alexandra Plate and later as the Alexandra Stakes before changing to the Queen Alexandra Stakes.

The distance has also changed, having previously being contested over 2 miles, 6 furlongs and 34 yards – but is was shortened as part of a track change at Ascot in 2005.

The Queen Alexandra Stakes, the traditional curtain closer of the meeting, sometimes features horses that have run in the Ascot Stakes in the first day of Royal Ascot. The last one to win the Queen Alexandra Stakes after running in the Ascot Stakes was Simenon in 2012.

The Queen Alexandra is Britain’s longest flat race, marginally longer than the Marathon Handicap run at Pontefract, so it often attracts horses from the National Hunt sphere.

The leading horse in this race is Brown Jack who won it six times over six consecutive years (1929-1934).

Four jockeys have won this race three times, with the most recent to achieve that feat being Ryan Moore: on Bergo (2010), Simenon (2012) and Pique Sous (2014)

The leading trainer is Dick Hern who won this race four times – Grey of Falloden (1965), Balinger (1980) and Cuff Link (1994, 1995).
