The largest field for the St James's Palace since 16 went to post in 2012, although there were notable absentees in the winners of the Poulains and the Irish Guineas, St Mark's Basilica and Mac Swiney, and the Newmarket runner-up Master of The Seas, though the form of all 3 classics was represented by Poetic Flare, a rare runner to contest all 3 races, his improved performance in routing this field testament to his constitution as well as his ability, his winning margin the widest in the race in the last 30 years, his performance on a par with the best in that time, bearing comparison with the likes of Shamardal and Rock of Gibraltar; Ontario, fired up in blinkers, went off far too fast and was essentially ignored, but the overall gallop was still a good one, supporting a high view of the form.
