An occasion supposed to mark a Yeats-equalling fourth Gold Cup for Stradivarius and a ninth for his similarly evergreen rider was instead shaped by an even older statesman of the weighing room aboard an up-and-coming stayer, Subjectivist's early move for home as the others in the frame - Stradivarius and Spanish Mission in particular - were still working for room not necessarily critical in deciding the race but certainly helping add to the margin of dominance, the lead eroded but at no stage looking like evaporating, providing Mark Johnston with a fourth win of his own in the race some 26 years on from the first with Double Trigger.
