With Dawn Approach and Magician, winners of the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and the Curragh respectively, both turning up, alongside the highly-regarded Toronado, this threatened to be a competitive, high-quality St James's Palace Stakes, and it was anything but a let-down, producing a thrilling finish between a couple of top-notch 3-y-o colts; there was a muddling element to the race, however, the early gallop only modest after pacemaker Leitir Mor broke awkwardly, not playing into the hands of those in rear, whilst Glory Awaits also caused problems for a few of them by edging left and carrying others across entering the final 2f, Toronado the unlucky one after being affected on both counts.
