It didn't look a strong renewal of the Hardwicke to start with, Ektihaam and Mount Athos standing out on pre-race ratings even though neither of them matched up to the 5-year standards for winners of this race, and it was made less competitive after the first-named slipped and unseated Paul Hanagan with just over 1m to run, whilst Mount Athos wasn't at his best over this trip; Ektihaam ensured a good pace for the first 4f and that was maintained by Universal after he'd slipped, making for a true test; the race was marred by the death of Thomas Chippendale shortly after winning.
