put the icing on the cake of an unparallelled season of big-race success for his trainer/jockey, bang there in a couple of the major handicap chases on the overtly-stronger Irish scene during the winter since his winning return and making light of a BHA mark of 146 on his first appearance in Britain, making it seem all very routine under another faultless Blackmore ride; crucially settled towards the inner in touch, he took extremely well to the fences, travelled fluently and only briefly looked in much danger on getting to the front 2 out, seeing things out well on his first crack at a marathon distance, further proof that, these days, prior course experience is bordering on a red herring as a key to solving the race, those making their first start over these fences a successful one far outweighing those winners who were returning for another crack in recent times.
jumped well, settled in touch on inner, closed down leader home turn, produced to lead 2 out, in command final 1f, ridden out

hadn't coped in the unorthodox environment of the Cross Country but looked a natural faced with this unconventional test for the first time, picking his way through from rear under a well-judged ride, getting closer by the second Canal Turn and giving chase to the winner from 2 out, shaking off Any Second Now from the elbow but unable to close down his 2-year younger stablemate ahead; he's been a lost soul since his Ryanair success in 2018 but would be worth returning here for the Becher next winter as he seeks to end his losing sequence.
held up, jumped soundly, wide early, smooth headway 2nd Canal Turn, chased leader from 2 out, held final 1f, kept on

mirrored the same stable's Seabass 9 years earlier by finishing third in the Grand National on the back of a warm-up success over as short of 2m, yet he might well have turned that minor placing into a win had things gone better for him on the way around, not far off Clan Royal or Beau territory in terms of luckless National runs this century, no sooner recovering from his sole blunder at the tenth than nearly brought to a standstill by the fallen Double Shuffle at the twelfth, making up significant ground to get into things between 3 out (only ninth there, 16 lengths behind leader and 8 lengths behind eventual winner) and 2 out, sustaining his effort well enough to dispute second at the elbow before he finally cracked; he'll surely be high on the shortlist again in 12 months.
tracked pace, blundered 10th, lost place when badly hampered 12th, off pace still 3 out, rapid headway before next, disputed 2nd 1f out, no extra

couldn't emulate Bobbyjo by adding a Grand National to his Irish version but threatened to for a long way, the extra distance proving too much for such an exuberant type by staying standards; he jumped and travelled as well as any but, having loomed up entering the straight, could do no more when asked from 2 out, hanging right as he faltered markedly on the run-in.

had got closest to The Shunter (Grade 1 runner-up earlier in week) in the Plate and is well worth another chance in a premier handicap chase or 2, holding his own in this one until his stamina ran dry, Kennedy having held him together for as long as possible, ultimately to no avail as his effort flattened out before the last.

has missed the Grand National boat but gave further evidence he's still a useful chaser, hollow though the tag of 'best of the British' might seem in the circumstances, creeping into things from a long way back under an exaggerated waiting ride (already in last when hampered first), in contention entering the straight but held from 2 out for all he passed a legless Discorama on the run-in.

shaped much better than the bare result coming here cold after 5 months off, though, to say his stamina seemed unlikely to be an issue, his finishing effort was worryingly tame, especially considering he'd had a second breathing operation during his absence; patiently ridden, not settle fully, took closer order circuit out, in touch when pushed along straight, no extra after 2 out, faltered run-in, finished tired.

failed to stay but not before giving it a good go under a trademark dashing National course ride from Waley-Cohen, maximising Jett's finishing position by utilising his best attributes for all he strictly went harder than ideal, soon jumping boldly in front, pressing on over a circuit out but swallowed up by the second last having still been 6 lengths clear the fence before.

tongue tied on his second outing since a breathing operation, wasn't at all on a going day tackling this course for the first time; mid-division, lost place third, hampered next, never going well after, struggling badly first Becher's Brook; he's hard to catch right at the best of times.

hasn't had much of a season in truth, certainly compared to his superb 2019/20 campaign, presumably brought along with this in mind but finding conditions had gone against him in first-time blinkers after 7 weeks off, losing his position in mid-field when blundering at The Chair and outpaced before the twentieth.

in headgear rather than a tongue strap this time, made little appeal on paper for a race like this, winless in more than 2 years now and especially patchy this season; mid-field, lost place when blundered first Canal Turn, soon done with second Valentine's.

The regrettable absence of dual winner Tiger Roll had seemingly robbed this year's Grand National of its biggest story, his absence one indicator of a possible dip in quality this year as well, but, in a season in which their success had already rewritten the record books at the other major spring festival in Britain, de Bromhead and Blackmore delivered yet again, this time on the sport's biggest stage, providing the former with a first National to go alongside his unprecedented big-race treble at Cheltenham and the latter with the rightly-lauded achievement of becoming the first female rider to land the prize, Minella Times - one of an octet of 8-y-os in the line-up - leading home a 1-2 for the trainer in a scene that mirrored the Gold Cup the previous month, the Irish domination of the major British jumps scene somehow tightening its stranglehold yet further as only 3 home-trained runners even managed to complete and, of those, only former National favourite Blaklion worked his way into the top 11, the winner and third both owned by JP McManus as the other well-represented ownership powerhouse, Gigginstown, mustered only one of the first half dozen; as has become the norm, even under spring-like conditions, and with Jett ensuring a strong pace, the fences didn't get in the way half as much as used to be the case, with only 8 either falling or unseating, the sole loss of life - as in the most recent edition in 2019 - occurring after a fence rather than in the jumping of it, the disadvantage of a wide route under these sort of conditions the other tactical angle worth recording.

MINELLA TIMES (IRE) put the icing on the cake of an unparallelled season of big-race success for his trainer/jockey, bang there in a couple of the major handicap chases on the overtly-stronger Irish scene during the winter since his winning return and making light of a BHA mark of 146 on his first appearance in Britain, making it seem all very routine under another faultless Blackmore ride; crucially settled towards the inner in touch, he took extremely well to the fences, travelled fluently and only briefly looked in much danger on getting to the front 2 out, seeing things out well on his first crack at a marathon distance, further proof that, these days, prior course experience is bordering on a red herring as a key to solving the race, those making their first start over these fences a successful one far outweighing those winners who were returning for another crack in recent times.

BALKO DES FLOS (FR) hadn't coped in the unorthodox environment of the Cross Country but looked a natural faced with this unconventional test for the first time, picking his way through from rear under a well-judged ride, getting closer by the second Canal Turn and giving chase to the winner from 2 out, shaking off Any Second Now from the elbow but unable to close down his 2-year younger stablemate ahead; he's been a lost soul since his Ryanair success in 2018 but would be worth returning here for the Becher next winter as he seeks to end his losing sequence.

ANY SECOND NOW (IRE) mirrored the same stable's Seabass 9 years earlier by finishing third in the Grand National on the back of a warm-up success over as short of 2m, yet he might well have turned that minor placing into a win had things gone better for him on the way around, not far off Clan Royal or Beau territory in terms of luckless National runs this century, no sooner recovering from his sole blunder at the tenth than nearly brought to a standstill by the fallen Double Shuffle at the twelfth, making up significant ground to get into things between 3 out (only ninth there, 16 lengths behind leader and 8 lengths behind eventual winner) and 2 out, sustaining his effort well enough to dispute second at the elbow before he finally cracked; he'll surely be high on the shortlist again in 12 months.

BURROWS SAINT (FR) couldn't emulate Bobbyjo by adding a Grand National to his Irish version but threatened to for a long way, the extra distance proving too much for such an exuberant type by staying standards; he jumped and travelled as well as any but, having loomed up entering the straight, could do no more when asked from 2 out, hanging right as he faltered markedly on the run-in.

FARCLAS (FR) had got closest to The Shunter (Grade 1 runner-up earlier in week) in the Plate and is well worth another chance in a premier handicap chase or 2, holding his own in this one until his stamina ran dry, Kennedy having held him together for as long as possible, ultimately to no avail as his effort flattened out before the last.

BLAKLION has missed the Grand National boat but gave further evidence he's still a useful chaser, hollow though the tag of 'best of the British' might seem in the circumstances, creeping into things from a long way back under an exaggerated waiting ride (already in last when hampered first), in contention entering the straight but held from 2 out for all he passed a legless Discorama on the run-in.

DISCORAMA (FR) shaped much better than the bare result coming here cold after 5 months off, though, to say his stamina seemed unlikely to be an issue, his finishing effort was worryingly tame, especially considering he'd had a second breathing operation during his absence; patiently ridden, not settle fully, took closer order circuit out, in touch when pushed along straight, no extra after 2 out, faltered run-in, finished tired.

JETT (IRE) failed to stay but not before giving it a good go under a trademark dashing National course ride from Waley-Cohen, maximising Jett's finishing position by utilising his best attributes for all he strictly went harder than ideal, soon jumping boldly in front, pressing on over a circuit out but swallowed up by the second last having still been 6 lengths clear the fence before.

CABARET QUEEN went as though she'd put her Cheltenham display behind her only to fail for stamina (and not just ability), fully exposed by now even at shorter; settled mid-field out wide, progress second Foinavon, ridden before straight, faded; she's reportedly been retired.

SHATTERED LOVE (IRE) an unlikely sort for this sort of test on paper, probably remains in form; mid-division, lost place when slow first Canal Turn, shaken up ninth, blundered 5 out, laboured headway from next, effort proved short-lived.

ALPHA DES OBEAUX (FR) completed in the race at the second attempt but didn't run half as well as he'd done in the Becher Chase in between, pecking at the ninth and making little impression from off the pace.

HOGAN'S HEIGHT (IRE) had already shone over these fences in winning the Grand Sefton (when ridden closer to pace) but effectively took no part in this so far behind did he find himself early on.

ACAPELLA BOURGEOIS (FR) wasn't seen to very best effect but hardly seemed to relish his belated first taste of these fences; mid-division, forced wide, baulked first Canal Turn, pecked first Valentine's, struggling before 5 out.

SUB LIEUTENANT (IRE) has deteriorated since his second in the 2019 Topham and, taken wide, was never involved.

CLASS CONTI (FR) ran one of his lesser races trying this course for the first time, never the slightest threat, not answering either way the question of stamina.

AMI DESBOIS (FR) was giving little sign he was going to improve from rear when falling at The Chair.

ANIBALE FLY (FR) has all the more to prove after this listless performance, an effort far worse than his previous 2 in this race; soon behind, never going well, tailed off when pulled up thirteenth.

BALLYOPTIC (IRE) predictably struggled on this course yet again back over fences after 7 weeks off; off pace out wide, struggling before eighteenth, refused twenty-first.

BRISTOL DE MAI (FR) would probably have run well below form anyway faced with this different examination after 9 weeks off but going around the houses hastened his demise; pecked first, settled mid-field out wide, clouted first Foinavon, struggling early final circuit.

CANELO (IRE) was still towards the rear when falling at The Chair.

CHRIS'S DREAM (IRE) shaped encouragingly until paying for his first error of note; patiently ridden, smooth headway second Canal Turn, disputed second Valentine's, probably about to lose ground but still in fourth all the same when unseated rider 4 out.

CLOTH CAP (IRE) missed likely his only chance of winning this race (reassessed BHA mark after Kelso of 162!) thanks to a physical issue, pressing the leader early, jumping on briefly over first Valentine's and still in second when stumbling on landing 5 out, dropping away quickly then, later said to have suffered a breathing problem.

DEFINITLY RED (IRE) has had his day in anything remotely competitive, running poorly given another try at this race 4 years after a luckless first go; mid-division, pushed along fourth, effort first Becher's Brook, labouring early final circuit; he's reportedly been retired.

DOUBLE SHUFFLE (IRE) survived an awkward jump at first Becher's before crashing out at the twelfth when still tracking the pace.

GIVE ME A COPPER (IRE) was soon under pressure out wide and still struggling when blundering at second Valentine's.

KIMBERLITE CANDY (IRE) had made long-term appeal for this race (seemingly saved for it as well) but had little go right; mid-division, hampered fourth, lost ground next, hampered again twentieth, no chance after.

LAKE VIEW LAD (IRE) had excuses for his failure to complete in the 2019 edition but not so here, barely taking off at the first tried in cheekpieces and falling heavily; he'd had a breathing operation since Kelso.

LORD DU MESNIL (FR) was unsuited by conditions 7 weeks on from his narrow success in the far more familiar environment of bottomless ground at Haydock; close up, shaken up after seventeenth, no response.

MAGIC OF LIGHT (IRE) runner-up to Tiger Roll in the latest Grand National in 2019, paid for a rare jumping lapse at the fourth when settled in mid-division.

MILAN NATIVE (IRE) is hard to assess at present but was let down by his jumping above all, settled in rear out wide, pecking badly at the seventeenth and struggling when doing similar 5 out.

MINELLACELEBRATION (IRE) is better known for his exploits on the Mildmay course here but had adapted well to the different test on the back of a second breathing operation until unseating in fairly soft fashion after a peck at the twelfth, closer than he'd been at any stage - in a share of fifth - at the time.

MISTER MALARKY tongue tied on his second outing since a breathing operation, wasn't at all on a going day tackling this course for the first time; mid-division, lost place third, hampered next, never going well after, struggling badly first Becher's Brook; he's hard to catch right at the best of times.

OK CORRAL (IRE) had his already slim chance ended when badly hampered at the first, always trailing after.

POTTERS CORNER (IRE) hasn't had much of a season in truth, certainly compared to his superb 2019/20 campaign, presumably brought along with this in mind but finding conditions had gone against him in first-time blinkers after 7 weeks off, losing his position in mid-field when blundering at The Chair and outpaced before the twentieth.

TAKINGRISKS (IRE) couldn't spring another upset in a premier staying handicap after 10 weeks off, seeming to hate every second of his belated first spin over these fences; in rear, jumped tentatively, never going well, tailed off when pulled up seventeenth.

TALKISCHEAP (IRE) hasn't given much hope he's anywhere near where he was in his prime in 2 starts back chasing, losing his place in mid-field at second Becher's, faltering by the Canal Turn and well beaten when slow at Valentine's.

THE LONG MILE became a, thankfully, relatively rare modern-day Grand National casualty, breaking a leg on the flat soon after second Becher's.

TOUT EST PERMIS (FR) in headgear rather than a tongue strap this time, made little appeal on paper for a race like this, winless in more than 2 years now and especially patchy this season; mid-field, lost place when blundered first Canal Turn, soon done with second Valentine's.

VIEUX LION ROUGE (FR) had cleared well over 200 fences without mishap on his many previous tries over this course but showed even the most assured Aintree horse can be susceptible to a lapse, just starting to creep closer from mid-division when falling at the twentieth.

YALA ENKI (FR) lost his handy position gradually before blundering and unseating (not his first error) at the twentieth when towards the rear.
