presumably benefited from the hike in distance as he defied an 11 lb rise for Newbury with an improved showing to land comfortably the most valuable success of his career, providing his yard with a very rare bright spot in an otherwise poor season; in touch, travelled smoothly, not fluent nineteenth, twenty-first, produced to lead 4 out, just held on from one that came from much further back.

has long since appealed as the sort to relish this type of test and, though failing narrowly, did enough to think that a 2018/19 campaign centred around the Grand National could pay dividends (though yard rarely targets horses at a specific race, preferring to try and pick up what it can along the way), his jumping holding up well in such a big field; held up, travelled fluently, steady headway from twenty-first, shaken up home turn, headway under pressure after 4 out, kept on well, just failed; he should be a fixture in the top long-distance handicaps for several seasons to come.

had presumably been laid out for this and, despite being notably easy to back near the off, acquitted himself with credit, arguably worth a bit extra over the result for trying to come from so far back; dropped out, crept closer early final circuit, not fluent nineteenth, kept on well from 4 out, nearest at the finish; he was fifth in the bet365 Gold Cup last season but the chances are it'll come too soon this time around, just a 7-day gap between races.

A typical Scottish National in most respects and no reason to doubt the form, the first 2 unexposed at extreme distances and the others to make the frame notably reliable types in this sort of race; as usual, there was no let-up in the gallop, but if anything the way things panned out slightly favoured the prominent-racers under the conditions, Ballyoptic coming from much further back than the winner and the fourth probably also better than the result in attempting to come from where he did.

JOE FARRELL (IRE) presumably benefited from the hike in distance as he defied an 11 lb rise for Newbury with an improved showing to land comfortably the most valuable success of his career, providing his yard with a very rare bright spot in an otherwise poor season; in touch, travelled smoothly, not fluent nineteenth, twenty-first, produced to lead 4 out, just held on from one that came from much further back.

BOA ISLAND (IRE) showed nothing on first outing since leaving Paul Nicholls after 6 months off; soon behind, labouring tenth, struggling when blundered fourteenth, pulled up circuit out.

GLENCAIRN VIEW (IRE) patiently ridden, pulled up before seventh, broke down badly.

STRAIDNAHANNA (IRE) found this much too tough back up the weights after 9 weeks off; in touch, blundered fifth, lost place around halfway, no threat early final circuit.

LOOKING WELL (IRE) has now looked far from straightforward on each of his last 3 outings, running poorly 11 weeks on from the Musselburgh incident; chased leaders, went with little fluency, lost place before halfway, beaten long way out; worth a try in headgear.

COGRY has gone off the boil but at least he may start to slip back down the weights as a result; chased leaders, not fluent fourteenth, eighteenth, ridden after next, pulled up before twenty-second.

BENBENS (IRE) ran poorly for the second outing in succession, understandable at his age if his enthusiasm is finally on the wane; in rear, went with little fluency, struggling when not fluent seventeenth.

HENRI PARRY MORGAN found this a completely different kettle of fish to Ffos Las, back up the weights, too; held up, never a threat.

GET ON THE YAGER wasn't beaten by lack of stamina alone 5 weeks on from the Midlands National, that effort maybe having left a mark on him in the short term; held up, shaken up before nineteenth, no response, pulled up twenty-first.

WEST APPROACH didn't run so poorly as being pulled up might suggest, marathon trips probably not for him; held up, blundered third, not fluent fourth, took closer order soon after halfway, weakened 5 out.

SIZING TENNESSEE (IRE) normally makes the running and seemed to turn it in with more patient tactics adopted; mid-field, slow sixth, lost place, pulled up before twelfth.

FAGAN looked an interesting runner stepping into handicap company for the first time and was strong in the betting after 6 months off but ran badly; mid-field, lost place around halfway, beaten long way out.

BEWARE THE BEAR (IRE) ran no sort of race; in rear, labouring eighteenth, lost touch soon after.

GOLD PRESENT (IRE) might have had something go amiss again but it's more than likely he simply failed to stay this much longer trip, especially given he was keener than ideal for a long way; close up, took strong hold, upsides seventh, went on after eighth, headed approaching twenty-first, weakened end of back straight.
