1000 Guineas: Timeform preview and free Race Pass

ArticleImage

The 1000 Guineas (15:35) at Newmarket on Sunday is available as a free Race Pass, which means logged-in customers can view all our premium comments and ratings.

There's a competitive edition of the 1000 Guineas (15:40) at Newmarket on Sunday with 16 runners set to head to post, including a French raider in Ramatuelle (125) who heads Timeform's weight-adjusted ratings based on the form she showed at shorter trips as a two-year-old.

Ramatuelle won three of her first four starts last season, including the Group 2 Prix Robert Papin, and then showed even better form in defeat when beaten a short neck in the Group 1 Prix Morny by Vandeek who advertised that form with a comprehensive victory in the Middle Park Stakes. Ramatuelle was second again on her return in the Prix Imprudence at Deauville last month, finishing behind a progressive rival, but she shaped nicely on her first start at seven furlongs and is entitled to be sharper for the run. The step up to a mile asks a new question but she's entitled to plenty of respect.

Another with leading form claims is Fallen Angel (123p). She showed significant run-by-run improvement as a juvenile, winning three of her four starts, most notably the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh. Fallen Angel travelled smoothly through that seven-furlong event and it was impressive how she quickened again when the runner-up briefly got upsides, ultimately finishing well on top and earning the Horse In Focus Flag. She still has more to offer and should have no problem staying a mile so she's a big player here.

Ylang Ylang (120) ran too badly to be true when sent off favourite in the Moyglare but she took a step back in the right direction when third in the Rockfel Stakes over seven furlongs here and then progressed again to land the Fillies' Mile over this course and distance, appreciating the extra emphasis on stamina. She's the sole contender for Aidan O'Brien, who has won five of the last ten renewals, and is a strong contender on form.

The other Group 1-winning filly in the line-up is Porta Fortuna (121) who won the Cheveley Park Stakes during a successful juvenile campaign that also included victory in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot. Porta Fortuna wasn't at her best when third to Fallen Angel in the Moyglare but bounced right back in the Cheveley Park, keeping on well to land what looked like a below-par edition, and she then ran at least as well when runner-up in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. That Breeders' Cup effort proved her stamina for a mile.

Godolphin won this last year with Mawj, and while that filly's trainer Saeed bin Suroor doesn't have a runner the owners have a couple of contenders with Charlie Appleby in Dance Sequence (117) and Cinderella's Dream (115p).

Dance Sequence looked a good prospect as a juvenile and won both starts last season, notably the Group 3 Oh So Sharp Stakes here over seven furlongs. She was beaten by Pretty Crystal when an odds-on favourite in the Nell Gwyn Stakes, again over seven furlongs on this track, on her return last month and left the impression that she would have won had she knuckled down properly. But it's still early days in her career and she's entitled to benefit from that experience and this step up to a mile, so it would be little suprise to see her progress.

Cinderella's Dream was given a low-key introduction last season, winning a Lingfield maiden and a Thirsk novice, but she has coped well in better company at Meydan this year. She showed a good turn of foot to win a conditions race and then posted a remarkable success in the Jumeirah 1000 Guineas, storming clear despite her saddle slipping before halfway. Both of those races were won last season by subsequent 1000 Guineas winner Mawj, incidentally.

Fallen Angel's trainer Karl Burke is also represented by Darnation (117) who posted her best effort last year when a decisive winner of the Group 2 May Hill Stakes at Doncaster where she relished the cut in the ground and the test of stamina. She was only a respectable fifth in the Prix Marcel Boussac on quicker ground, however.

See The Fire (116p) was no match for the more experienced Darnation in the May Hill but improved on that form when third behind Ylang Ylang in the Fillies' Mile here, leaving the impression she may have won had she kept a straighter course. She's bred to flourish over middle distances but clearly has ability and is entitled to plenty of respect.

Elmalka (116p) did well to overcome a pace bias on debut at Southwell last year and shaped with plenty of promise when upped in class in the Group 3 Fred Darling Stakes at Newbury a couple of weeks ago, running on well into third and earning the Horse In Focus Flag. She's a promising sort and should be suited by the step up to a mile though her lack of experience is a concern.

Regal Jubilee (116) was a neck in front of Elmalka when runner-up at Newbury, running well on her return over a trip likely to prove short of her best. She won a listed race over this course and distance on testing ground last season and will be suited by a return to a mile, but others have stronger form claims.

Pretty Crystal (114) was beaten on all four starts in Group company as a juvenile but showed improved form to win the Nell Gwyn on her reappearance here last month, displaying a willing attitude to prevail by a neck. She's likely to stay a mile but more is needed.

Tamfana (117) showed run-by-run improvement last season, signing off with victory in the Group 3 Prix Miesque at Chantilly, and she ran well when a close-up third in the Prix Imprudence at Deauville, finishing half a length behind Ramatuelle. She's already won over a mile so will have no problem stepping back up in trip.

Sacred Angel (114) won the Group 3 Princess Margaret Stakes last season before hitting the frame in the Prix Morny and Cheveley Park Stakes but has a bit to find on form. She's unraced beyond six furlongs so has stamina to prove.

Star Music (106) was well held when last of six in the Fred Darling on her return at Newbury, while Rolica (98p) has plenty to find on form after winning a seven-furlong maiden here last month.

Star Style (109P) is also just a maiden winner but earned the Horse In Focus Flag and the Timeform Large P, to highlight significant improvement is likely, when bolting up on debut at Newbury a couple of weeks ago. This is a big ask but she's an exciting prospect.

Timeform's Analyst Verdict:

It was hard not be taken by the way FALLEN ANGEL picked up again when joined in the closing stages of the Moyglare and, with 1m likely to suit on that evidence, she can improve again and provide the increasingly-powerful Karl Burke stable with a first British Classic success. French-raider Ramatuelle is second choice ahead of Dance Sequence, who should relish the step up to 1m, and Fillies' Mile winner Ylang Ylang.

Timeform's weight-adjusted ratings:

125 Ramatuelle
123p Fallen Angel
121 Porta Fortuna
120 Ylang Ylang
117 Darnation
117 Dance Sequence
117 Tamfana
