is very progressive on good or firmer ground, his reappearance on softish going easy to forgive, as was a below-par sixth in the Middle Park that ended last season, and back under suitable conditions he improved even on last year's Group 1-winning form to defy a penalty from smart rivals; tracked pace, travelled smoothly, quickened to lead entering final 1f, edged right late on, ridden out; he won at Royal Ascot last year, landing the Norfolk, and has to be one of the leading contenders for next month's Commonwealth Cup.

had finished ahead of Sioux Nation on his last 2 starts, which perhaps explains why he was strong in the betting near the off, and although he couldn't confirm superiority over his stablemate this was a clear return to form with a run behind him, albeit not quite matching up to the form of his second in last year's Middle Park; made running, headed entering final 1f, kept on; he disappointed when tried over 7f in the Acomb but is worth another try up in trip.

was ahead of the first 2 at Navan but probably handled the testing ground better than that pair there and may well have been fitter too, this race probably a truer reflection of their merit, improving his own rating a bit more even in finishing third; in touch, close up 2f out, not quicken, kept on; this confirms that he's effective on firmer ground as well having raced only on softer than good previously.

is in top form, regularly having her sights set high and doing as well as she can, and she'll fall on weaker pattern races than this in the coming weeks/months; held up, headway out wide over 1f out, driven entering final 1f, ran on; she's likeable and should prove as effective at 7f. .

had each of the first 3 behind him when winning at Navan but he revels in the mud and that was on soft ground, these conditions simply not as suitable, not disgraced under the circumstances; in touch, outpaced halfway, plugged on but lacked the pace to make much impression.

needs to prove that he's trained on, especially as his figure comes from the first half of his juvenile campaign, but should strip fitter for the run after 8 months off so worth a chance to prove he retains his useful ability; held up, driven over 1f out, no extra inside final 1f.

In 2017 this was won by Group-1 performer Caravaggio and it again went the way of an Aidan O'Brien-trained colt that's already had top-level success, with last year's Middle Park runner-up in second to give the form an even more solid look; it seemed a fair race tactically.
