A huge upset in the first recognised Derby trial of the year, Aidan O'Brien responsible for 3 of the quintet, the odds-on favourite who shaped as if better for the outing one of those, and it was a stable-switcher who was the rag of the field that found plenty of improvement to take his form to a smart level.

DALLAS STAR (FR) certainly boasts the physique to do better this year and caused a major surprise on first outing since leaving Dominic Ffrench Davis after 6 months off, seemingly no fluke about it, however, and worth crediting with a smart performance, both his successes having been with cut in the ground; led, headed 4f out, led again under 2f out, kept up to work.

THE EUPHRATES up in grade, improved another chunk behind one that did the same, shaping as if ready for a step up to 1½m; in touch, lost place end of back straight, kept on from 2f out, no impression on winner; will progress again.

ILLINOIS (IRE) was a warm order to make a winning return after 6 months off - his final start at 2 yrs proving strong form - but ultimately shaped as if better for the run; waited with, headway under pressure home turn, one paced; it's worth repeating that 1½m will suit and he very much remains open to improvement.

DEEPONE should stay at least this far but was easy to back and, like Illinois who finished a place ahead of him, shaped as if needing the run after 7 months off; prominent, led 4f out, headed under 2f out, no extra final 1f; likely to be much closer to form next time, should he reoppose against some of these in the Derrinstown.

OCEAN OF DREAMS (IRE) had created a huge impression when a wide-margin winner on debut 6 months earlier but was amiss, said to have returned lame; slowly into stride, always behind (eased off straight).
