stepped up markedly on his reappearance run after 8 weeks off and confirmed himself a force to be reckoned with at the highest level, the manner in which he knuckled down and saw his race out boding extremely well for the remainder of the season; soon steadied, travelled fluently, jumped better than last time, headway home turn, ridden from last, edged left, stayed on to lead dying strides; still only rising 7, he's open to yet more progress.

back up in trip, bounced back to his best, enjoying the run of things to some extent, but also jumping as well as he ever has over fences and making the winner pull out all the stops, the impact of his rider losing her irons in the final 50 yards difficult to assess for all it hardly helped; close up, led third, shaken up approaching last, idled run-in/rider lost irons, edged out dying strides; a top-class chaser, he will reportedly head straight to the Cheltenham Gold Cup, though whether or not the step up in trip on such a stiff track will suit remains to been seen.

ran at least as well in defeat as when beating Delta Work and the King George winner Clan des Obeaux the time before, making the frame in this race for the third time in as many years; held up, took closer order from 5 out, chased leaders home turn, every chance last, kept on; a consistent and likeable performer, he will continue to give a good account.

who won this race last year, had his return to the track delayed due to ownership irregularities, though shaped encouragingly after 8 months off, looking a bit rusty early but warming to his task and losing little in defeat behind a trio that all had the benefit of recent outings; led, awkward first, headed third, remained prominent, jumped right tenth, ridden home turn, every chance last, one paced; likely to be back to best next time.

wasn't seen to best effect under a typically patient ride, doing his best work in the latter stages having briefly been caught out of his ground off the home turn and conceded first run to most of his rivals; waited with, travelled well, shaken up entering straight, briefly threatened from last, kept on; he remains a staying chaser to be positive about.

back up in trip, ran as well as could be expected, though was probably flattered by his proximity to the principals; prominent, not fluent eleventh, ridden from home turn, fourth last, no extra, well positioned.

has gone well fresh in the past, but never in such a competitive scenario and he was ultimately found wanting when things got serious; in touch, not fluent 3 out, ridden from next, weakened approaching last; he's entitled to come on from this.

A high-quality renewal of this Grade 1 featuring most of the very best staying chasers in Ireland and, while the compressed nature of the finish might be a reason to question the bare form, it’s still a race to view positively with regard to upcoming contests, especially in the case of the winner, who is a chaser firmly on the up and was providing Gigginstown with their fifth win in the race in 6 years.
