Not a vintage renewal of final Irish classic of the season, only one of the runners having a Group 1 win to their name beforehand, and with the early pace being no better than steady, it perhaps wasn’t the stamina test it might have been, though there is little reason to doubt the result, Flag of Honour enjoying the run of things to a large extent, but well on top of the Irish Derby winner Latrobe at the line, in the process becoming only the second 3-y-o to win the race since 2001.

FLAG OF HONOUR (IRE) eked out a bit more improvement and landed a C&D hat-trick, seen to good effect the way things developed, but also well on top of his rivals at the finish, this success providing his powerful yard with yet another St Leger double after Kew Gardens' success in the Doncaster equivalent; made all, travelled well, kicked on home turn, ridden 2f out, stayed on well; he will stay at least 2m and appeals as by far the most likely candidate from Ballydoyle to try and fill the void left by Order of St George in the staying division next year, though in the meantime the British Champions Long Distance Cup at Ascot in October looks an ideal end-of-season target.

LATROBE (IRE) bounced back to his best, seeing out the longer trip well, albeit in a race that didn't place an awful lot of emphasis on stamina; in touch, travelled well, chased leader entering straight, kept on, no impression on winner; a smart colt, connections intimated beforehand that he was being considered for the Melbourne Cup, though he'll clearly have stamina to prove should that endeavour come to fruition.

WEEKENDER ran respectably upped in grade, not quite matching the form he showed in the Ebor, though he clearly wasn't seen to best effect the way things developed, making his effort from further back than the pair that beat him; waited with, took strong hold, ridden entering straight, carried head bit awkwardly, one paced late on; he's worth another chance.

TWILIGHT PAYMENT (IRE) isn't quite up to this level, but ran right up to his best and deserves credit for his consistency if nothing else; close up, ridden home turn, one paced.

IDAHO (IRE) was slightly below form, though there were mitigating circumstances on this occasion, chopped for room at a cruciial stage and just unable to recover as a result, his rider not hard on him once his chance had gone; prominent, ridden 3f out, snatched up 2f out, no further impression.

CYPRESS CREEK (IRE) faced a stiff task in this grade and wasn't subjected to an overly hard ride; held up, effort entering straight, never on terms.
