given 11 weeks off since Kempton, made it 3 wins from as many starts this season in landing a second Champion Chase, showing form about 2 stone shy of what he achieved when putting up the greatest chase performance of the modern era in the first one, no longer capable of that sort of outstanding effort but still a top-class chaser, more than a match for the best around at the moment, and it's to the immense credit of his trainer that he's doing this at all mindful of how much has gone wrong for him in the meantime; comfortable with the strong pace, he raced in third for much of the way, jumped well in the main (bit untidy when closing 3 out but produced some spectacular leaps otherwise), took over from the 2 pace-setters approaching 2 out and was well in control when making a slight mistake at the last, nearly 8 lengths up on the run-in, tiring a little up the hill and driven out to make sure; one or more of Aintree, Sandown and Punchestown are options for him this spring, though he may not be the sort to stand too much racing these days, and there's arguably more to be lost than gained in asking him to race again this season.

all the rage in the betting 8 weeks on from another Grade 1 win at Ascot, met with defeat for the first time when completing over fences, coming up short faced with his most meaningful opposition so far in the shape of an on-song Sprinter Sacre, and while it's fair to say this race didn't go all his way, unable to lead with Special Tiara in the field and probably doing a bit much in pursuit of that rival in a strongly-run race, it's a bit of a stretch to suggest that the result would've been a whole lot different had things panned out another way; soon chasing the leader in second, he made small mistakes at the first and fourth, took over going powefully after 4 out but had no answer once the winner breezed by on the home turn, all out to maintain second on the run-in; it's possible he wasn't quite at his best on the day for some reason, and even if not he's bound to win more good races over fences, especially when able to dominate, though this defeat means there's more of a limit in place with him now, and this division is only going to get tougher next year with his stable-companion Douvan about to come onto the scene.

ran a cracker after 3 months off, finishing third in this race for the second year running, that despite again doing plenty in front, and there'll be races at this level another time when his trademark trailblazing tactics will be that much easier to pull off, starting in the Celebration Chase at Sandown he won last year on the back of another third in this; made running, pecked third, headed after 4 out, effort before 2 out, kept on.

had form this season good enough to get involved (has beaten Special Tiara and finished second to both Sprinter Sacre and Un de Sceaux) but just ran flat-out poorly back from 8 weeks off, something maybe not right for him to perform as he did, always right out the back.

All 10 ran. Fences: 13.

Winning Owner: Mrs Caroline Mould

Time: 3m 49.6s Closing Sectional: (3.65f): 55.30s (95.3%)

A race that was supposed to be the coronation of a new champion instead saw the continued resurgence of an old one, Sprinter Sacre lowering the colours of the much-vaunted Un de Sceaux, and while in terms of form, it was a good rather than vintage Champion Chase, the likes of the fourth, fifth and sixth holding it down, the spectacle and story of a second win in the race for one of the great chasers adds up to something altogether greater than that; Special Tiara set a fast gallop, chased most closely by Un de Sceaux, and it's possible that pair cut each other's throats a little, though the winner scored with such authority to think he was simply the best at the weights on the day.

SPRINTER SACRE (FR) given 11 weeks off since Kempton, made it 3 wins from as many starts this season in landing a second Champion Chase, showing form about 2 stone shy of what he achieved when putting up the greatest chase performance of the modern era in the first one, no longer capable of that sort of outstanding effort but still a top-class chaser, more than a match for the best around at the moment, and it's to the immense credit of his trainer that he's doing this at all mindful of how much has gone wrong for him in the meantime; comfortable with the strong pace, he raced in third for much of the way, jumped well in the main (bit untidy when closing 3 out but produced some spectacular leaps otherwise), took over from the 2 pace-setters approaching 2 out and was well in control when making a slight mistake at the last, nearly 8 lengths up on the run-in, tiring a little up the hill and driven out to make sure; one or more of Aintree, Sandown and Punchestown are options for him this spring, though he may not be the sort to stand too much racing these days, and there's arguably more to be lost than gained in asking him to race again this season.
