wasted no time making amends for his unlucky defeat in the Ryanair, putting up a top-class effort to turn a Grade 1 into such a procession, potentially one of the best over fences anywhere in recent seasons, even taking into account that most of his obvious rivals underperformed; racing close up, he always looked comfortable in a well-run race, jumped superbly and surged right away from floundering rivals after being produced to lead 3 out; the Grade 1 chase scene at this trip and beyond is something to savour, especially with this season's excellent crop of novices about to step up, and Don Cossack is going to be a major player whatever the opposition.

went with plenty of zest 4 months on from when last seen in the King George but had no answer when tackled by the winner, evidence mounting that his problems over the last couple of seasons mean he's just not the top-class chaser of old; made running, travelled well, joined 4 out, headed when mistake next, no extra from 2 out.

closely matched with the winner judged on Thurles form in January, was well backed but ran below form after 8 weeks off, having been forced to miss Cheltenham, not asked to lead this time and not picking up having raced in mid-field to 4 out, a mistake at the next finishing him off.

has gone well fresh but was below form after 4 months off, hard to be sure why, though maybe this isn't his ideal track, soundness also perhaps an issue (reportedly had minor throat surgery since the King George); pressed leader, pushed along before 4 out, weakened 2 out.

All 10 ran. Fences: 16.

Winning Owner: Gigginstown House Stud

Time: 4m 52.3s Closing Sectional: (3.15f): 46.80s (98.4%)

A vintage field on paper for this year's Melling Chase, no fewer than 6 of the 10 established as top class, though most had something to prove as well and in the event there were more disappointing runs that good ones; as such, the form isn't the easiest to assess, with a bit of an end-of-season feel, though even a conservative view has the winner putting up a tip-top effort, and the visual impression in a well-run race was about as positive as it gets.

DON COSSACK (GER) wasted no time making amends for his unlucky defeat in the Ryanair, putting up a top-class effort to turn a Grade 1 into such a procession, potentially one of the best over fences anywhere in recent seasons, even taking into account that most of his obvious rivals underperformed; racing close up, he always looked comfortable in a well-run race, jumped superbly and surged right away from floundering rivals after being produced to lead 3 out; the Grade 1 chase scene at this trip and beyond is something to savour, especially with this season's excellent crop of novices about to step up, and Don Cossack is going to be a major player whatever the opposition.
