King of Rooks – Norfolk Stakes
King of Rooks had the advantage of being drawn near the far rail in the National Stakes, but it was still a strikingly-impressive performance from Richard Hannon’s juvenile, one which has to rank as the best from a two-year-old so far this season. In pulling five lengths clear of Buratino, with a further length back to strongly-supported favourite Steady Pace in third, King of Rooks confirmed himself an exciting prospect who will head to Royal Ascot with leading claims.
He may have been beaten at Ascot on debut but King of Rooks has progressed markedly since, first blitzing the opposition in a Newbury maiden before taking apart stronger opposition at Sandown. He has won over six furlongs but, given the speed he shows, five furlongs looks his optimum trip at present and he’ll take the beating in the Norfolk Stakes.
Jim Bolger won the Coventry Stakes three seasons ago with subsequent 2000 Guineas winner Dawn Approach, and there will be plenty of people thinking that Round Two can capture the Coventry en route to the very top, such is the impression he has created in comfortably winning both starts. Round Two showed a smart turn of foot to win a steadily-run six-furlong affair on debut, getting the better of a previous winner who has since given the form a boost, and he produced an even better effort when winning a strongly-contested five-furlong listed race at the Curragh last time. It was impressive how Round Two really stamped his authority in the closing stages, knuckling down well to draw clear, and he appeals as a likeable, straightforward type who is blessed with a potent mix of speed and stamina.
Log Out Island – Norfolk or Coventry Stakes
Log Out Island is trained by Richard Hannon, like King of Rooks, but is also owned by Godolphin, like Round Two, so it’ll be interesting to see whether he ends up in the Norfolk or the Coventry, but he’d certainly merit respect in either contest based on his wildly-impressive debut win at Ascot.
Log Out Island played up a bit in the paddock when mounted, but he was thoroughly professional in the race itself and quickened clear to win by four and a half lengths in the style of a horse ready to make an impact at a higher grade.
It wasn’t just a visually-impressive success, however. Log Out Island did something not many juveniles can do: namely clock a Timeform rating and timefigure in excess of 100 on debut. Log Out Island became just the fifth horse in the past three seasons to accomplish such a feat, following on from Night of Thunder, Kingman, Toormore and Likely.
