Able Friend – Queen Anne Stakes
The Queen Anne Stakes is the first race at Royal Ascot, and it also promises to be the best. Last season’s 2000 Guineas winner Night of Thunder and the highly-progressive winning machine Solow are big draws in their own right, but it’s the presence of Hong Kong superstar Able Friend that makes the contest a truly mouth-watering prospect.
Able Friend is a top-class racehorse and a prolific winner at Sha Tin, successful in a number of Hong Kong’s leading races. He’s won his last six starts, all with plenty in hand, and looked very special when cruising to success in the Champions Mile last time.
Able Friend will take plenty of beating if able to reproduce his best form away from Sha Tin.
The Commonwealth Cup is shaping up to be a fantastic new addition to the Royal meeting as Tiggy Wiggy and Limato, last season’s leading juveniles based on Timeform ratings, are set to do battle with American raider Hootenanny. Throw in the progressive Adaay, along with Greenham winner Muhaarar, and you have a fascinating conundrum.
Hootenanny showed blistering speed to win the Windsor Castle at last year’s Royal meeting, proving in a different league to the domestic juveniles at such an early stage of the season, and he showed his versatility when bouncing back to winning ways in the one-mile Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf having finished runner-up in the Prix Morny in the interim.
He didn’t have a lot to beat on his return at Keeneland, but he got the job done in impressive style, and looks to have leading claims at Royal Ascot under what may prove to be optimum conditions.
Brazen Beau – Diamond Jubilee Stakes
The Australian raiders have proven themselves to be formidable opponents when it comes to Royal Ascot sprints, winning with horses such as Black Caviar, Scenic Blast and Miss Andretti in recent years, and Brazen Beau may be able to provide further success.
Brazen Beau signed off last season with a win in the Grade 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (6f) and came on from a reappearance second in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes when producing a career-best effort to land the Newmarket Handicap.
The form that Brazen Beau showed at Flemington last time is well in advance of anything the domestic challengers have achieved and he will hold leading claims in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes.
