O'BRIEN AND MOORE TAKE TOP TRAINER AND JOCKEY TITLESQueen Anne Stakes 2016: Tepin tops adjusted Timeform ratings
Posted in: Royal Ascot News
Tepin, trained in Canada by Mark Casse, has won her last six starts in North America, and those victories include Grade 1 successes at Keeneland in the First Lady Stakes, the Breeders’ Cup Mile, and most recently in the Jenny Wiley Stakes, where she ran to a Timeform rating of 127 when beating Wekeela by five lengths with some ease.
With the news that last year’s top miler Solow, who won the 2015 Queen Anne along with the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood and the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day at Ascot, is out for the foreseeable future with an injury, Tepin is now a general 3/1 chance for the opening race of Royal Ascot 2016.
The first, fourth and fifth from Newbury’s Lockinge stakes are also prominent in the betting, with the winner, Godolphin’s Belardo, currently around 8/1, while Limato – who finished fourth at Newbury but is perhaps worth another chance to prove his stamina for a mile after shaping well – is available to back at 12/1. Toormore, who was fourth behind Solow in last year’s race, is a general 16/1-shot.
Tepin will be tackling a straight mile for the first time if lining up in the Queen Anne, and will be looking to take to Ascot’s unique test better than fellow North American raider Animal Kingdom did when he was sent off a 5/4 favourite for the race in 2013 only to eventually trail home in eleventh place.
Animal Kingdom came into the 2013 Queen Anne Timeform-rated 128 – just 1 lb above Tepin – after his impressive two-length win over Red Cadeaux in the 2013 Dubai World Cup at Meydan.
Casse acknoledges that the test Tepin faces will be a very different one for his star mare: "Royal Ascot is definitely going to be a little more difficult. You just never know when you try something new [Ascot’s straight mile]."
But he still remains quietly confident: "I would have been a little more worried because a mile uphill is a lot more taxing than a mile in the US, but the way Tepin has run recently suggests that, now she is older and wiser, she doesn’t have the distance limitations she had early on."
Queen Anne Stakes - Betfair Betting: 11/4 Tepin, 7/1 Belardo, 7/1 Time Test, 8/1 Ervedya, 9/1 Limato, 12/1 bar
