Aintree Day Three: Timeform's Lucky 15

Springwell Bay - 15:00 Aintree
Trained by Jonjo O'Neill, Springwell Bay made it three from four over hurdles with an effortless victory at Wetherby last month, completing a simple task with the minimum of fuss. Settled just behind the leader in the early stages, he moved to the front at the last and never looked in any danger of defeat from there as he quickly asserted to win hard held by a length and three-quarters. An exciting prospect, Springwell Bay is likely to prove capable of significantly better than he's shown so far and it will be interesting to see what he can do now pitched in at the top level for the first time in his career.
Home By The Lee - 15:35 Aintree
Home By The Lee wasn't seen to best effect when last seen finishing fifth in the Stayers' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, doing very well under the circumstances to be beaten only three and three-quarter lengths having made a bad mistake at the sixth which knocked him right back. There was lots to like about the way he rallied late on and that performance cemented his status as a serious player in this division having won the Grade 1 Christmas Hurdle at Leopardstown on his previous start. A couple of those who finished ahead of him at Cheltenham are in opposition again here, but he didn't enjoy the rub of the green on that occasion and is worth another chance.
Delta Work - 17:15 Aintree
Delta Work was beaten a total of 22 lengths when finishing third in last year's Grand National, but he is 1 lb lower in the weights this time and seemingly arrives in better form having produced a top-class effort to repeat his 2022 win in the Cross Country Chase at the Cheltenham Festival last time, proving very game on the run-in to beat stablemate Galvin by two and a half lengths. The rain-softened ground here will be in his favour and another bold bid seems assured for Gordon Elliott, who saddles six runners as he seeks a record-equalling fourth win in this race.
Centara - 18:20 Aintree
Paul Nicholls won this race in 2019 and 2021 and in the shape of Centara he has another solid chance. Centara mirrored his dam by making an authoritative winning start in a bumper, looking a really bright prospect as he stretched five lengths clear of the runner-up who had improved from his debut effort. Centara may have been at an advantage taking a wider route, but he displayed a smart turn of foot and is also bred to go a bit, while the timefigure also gives his performance a bit of substance. There should be plenty more to come from him and he looks a leading player up in grade.
