A race designed to settle any argument as to which is the best of the classic milers before they take on their elders, though with the winners of the Irish Guineas and the Poulains missing it may not have filled that purpose anyway, still less the way the race unfolded, Newmarket scorer Coroebus the clear form pick and sent off a shade of odds-on, his main rivals stepping up in class, plenty willing to take him on - the field was due to be the largest since 2012 until a couple of non runners - and that led to traffic problems in a race where the pace didn't get the runners strung out, the 11 closely bunched and towards the rail into the straight, space at a premium, barely half a length covering the first 5 at the line, the next 3 not beaten far either, the fourth most unlucky and rated the winner, though Coroebus was a fair way below the level of his Guineas form and a well-run rematch would be no forgone conclusion in favour of Maljoom; in short, a fascinating race that threw up as many questions as answers.
