The typical small field for a race that invariably suffers from its proximity to the Derby, but that actually wasn't the case this year, the pair who fought it out both having run at Epsom, the first time since Permian in 2017 that the winner of this race had done so, that a year in which there were 20 days between the contests whereas Changingoftheguard and Grand Alliance had to deal with a mere 13-day gap; none of the other quartet were able to improve in a soundly-run race and the runner-up really ought to have won, losing far more ground by veering across the track late on than he was beaten by.
