The withdrawal of Sibila Spain, who got upset in the stalls, left just 7 runners, the second-smallest field since this race was first run, as the Windsor Forest, in 2004, though the field didn't want for quality, the best of these up to standard for the race, 2 of them Group 1 winners from last year, Saffron Beach the first to carry a Group 1-penalty to victory and only the third winner, following Favourable Terms in the first running and Usherette in 2016, to carry any sort of penalty successfully, her performance one of the best in the race's history, though several of her rivals failed to fire, particularly Bashkirova, who looked ill at ease on the ground, and Mother Earth, the performance of the runner-up also raising some doubts about how good the form is; the pace was on the steady side and only Novemba, who lost 2 places late on, and the winner were ever really involved.
