The Gold Cup, first run in 1807, and still considered by some to be the centrepiece of racing's showcase fixture, has produced its share of equine heroe and characters; however, surely few winners of Europe's premier staying prize can have matched the current title holder, Royal Rebel, for a mixture of ability and sheer cussedness, a combination which for a second successive time produced post-race drama; in contrast to a year ago, where proceedings had provided for a searching test of stamina, the latest renewal wasn't anything like so strongly run, the pace until the field turned up from Swinley Bottom some 7f out a slow one, with the result that the first 12 home were separated by approximately 9l; therefore, the form may not prove compeletely reliable; Akbar was a late withdrawal due to lameness.
