O'BRIEN AND MOORE TAKE TOP TRAINER AND JOCKEY TITLESThe Timeform Expert's View: Day Four's Best Bets

NAP: Ten Sovereigns, Commonwealth Cup, 15:40 Ascot
Ten Sovereigns is a short price to give Aidan O’Brien a second Commonwealth Cup and it’s very easy to see why, shaping really well over a trip that stretched him in the 2000 Guineas last time (also raced in the disadvantaged far-side group). He comfortably beat second favourite Jash in the Middle Park as a two-year-old, and has the pedigree to take well to the track, his sire No Nay Never one of many Ascot winners (Norfolk Stakes) by the late Scat Daddy.
Next Best: Pondus, King Edward VII Stakes, 15:05 Ascot
Japan is well clear on ratings on his third in the Derby and will be hard to beat if repeating that. However, this race does come quite soon after Epsom and he certainly wouldn’t be the first colt to recoil from a big Derby performance in this race, recent winners tending to be ‘also rans’ in the classic or indeed not running in it at all. Pondus falls into the latter category and it’s interesting that James Fanshawe, usually a very patient trainer, has got him in this sort of grade already, just four starts into a career that only began in April. Pondus certainly looked a group horse in the making when bolting up under a penalty in a novice at Sandown last time, and with the form of his two wins continuing to stack up well, he’s worth backing to upset Japan on Friday.
Longshot: Gallic, Sandringham Handicap, 17:00 Ascot
Gallic was a bit flat when we last saw her, but she’s been put in at a huge price for the Sandringham as a result and could easily outrun her odds if belatedly building on the promise of her reappearance at Newmarket in April, where she shaped well and finished around a number of subsequent improvers. She’s trained by Ed Walker, who took this race last year with another well-bred filly, and she looks to have a nice draw in stall 20 if the opening two days is anything to go by.
