O'BRIEN AND MOORE TAKE TOP TRAINER AND JOCKEY TITLESThe Timeform Expert's View: Day Five's Best Bets

Nap: Cleonte, Queen Alexandra Stakes, (17:35 Ascot)
I’m saving the best for last as it’s the Queen Alexandra that throws up the best bet of the day and the horse I like is Cleonte. He had a really good season once upped in trip last year, ending it with a place in the Cesarewitch and his third in the Sagaro at this track on his reappearance suggests he is better than ever. A run in the Chester Cup is easy to excuse given conditions that day and he can get back on the up here. Max Dynamite is favourite, but I’m not sure he’ll relish the trip like Cleonte, while he was more miss than hit last year and is returning from a long enough absence for a well-travelled 9-y-o.
Next Best: Lah Ti Dar, Hardwicke Stakes, (15:40 Ascot)
The Hardwicke looks a really competitive race, and one of four or five could win, but at the prices it’s Lah Ti Dar that appeals most. Her form claims are as good as any and I liked the way she got the job done over an inadequate ten furlongs on her reappearance. Her Coronation Cup is easy to forgive – it was clear from a long way out she hated the track and a repeat of her St Leger effort – where she was ahead of Southern France – can see her go close.
Longshot: Soldier's Minute, Wokingham Stakes, (17:00 Ascot)
It might be pushing my lucky peddling a 16/1 chance as a longshot in a race like the Wokingham but I have no hesitation in putting up Soldier’s Minute as a good bet with so much seeming in his favour. He’s one of the most progressive horses in the race and was very impressive when winning in a big field at York on his most recent start, that win making him the pick on Timeform ratings. He has a very high draw, which historically for the Wokingham has proven an advantage, while the pace set up suggests he should get the race run to suit, out and out front-runner Gifted Master berthed next door to him. There’s a possibly something might come from the clouds and run him down late on, but he looks sure to give us plenty to cheer about.
