Last year’s crop of three-year-old fillies, certainly those best around a mile, have long been felt to be a below-average bunch. Some of the leading graduates from that class square up again in the Duke of Cambridge, but they are expected to be taught a lesson by the most decorated female miler in training.
Integral won this race last year, before landing a couple of Group 1s, the Falmouth and Sun Chariot, in which she saw off the best of the three-year-olds including 1000 Guineas winner Miss France. With an encouraging reappearance against Group 1 males behind her (close-up fourth in the Lockinge), Integral is expected to re-assert her authority against her own sex here.

It must be quite some time since an older-horse Group 1 has produced a field in which nearly half of the runners can boast a Timeform ‘p’ beside their name. It’s four of nine in the Prince of Wales, now that California Chrome’s out. Cannock Chase and The Corsican are yet to prove their Group 1 credentials, while Ectot failed his first major test in the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe. Despite being only four starts into his career, Free Eagle has proved himself at Group 1 level.
Free Eagle was the major postscript to last year’s thrilling Champion Stakes finale between Noble Mission and Al Kazeem. It’s easy to forget that he was beaten only just over a length in third, on what was just his fourth start overall. That run puts his achievement above that of his rivals, while his profile makes his ‘p’ just that little bit more prominent. He deserves to be a clear favourite, and prices of 3/1 on Tuesday evening seem more than fair.
Each-way: Munaaser – 17:00 Royal Ascot
Munaaser met GM Hopkins, one of the favourites for the Hunt Cup, in the Silver Cambridgeshire last year. GM Hopkins came out on top decisively that day, though the weights have swung 9 lb in Munaaser’s favour since, while he’s done less to blot his copybook and has the better of the draw here. It isn’t enough for us to say he holds a better chance than GM Hopkins, but he certainly doesn’t deserve to be more than twice the price.
To look at Munaaser’s profile you’d be very hopeful of progress as a four-year-old. Trained by Stoute, he went forward in fits and starts last year, culminating in that very useful second to GM Hopkins. You can scratch his reappearance at Newbury, that seemingly a means to an end- and there are few more natural ends for an unexposed, useful mile handicapper than the Royal Hunt Cup.
