Nap: Brazen Beau – 16:20 Royal Ascot
While Tuesday’s King’s Stand shows that the British sprinters are still playing musical chairs, the Australians, as ever, aren’t mucking about. Brazen Beau is an emerging force in their much-stronger sprinting division, having captured his second Group 1 against some more experienced rivals in the Newmarket Handicap last time. He was receiving weight that day, but in truth given he won by a little less than three lengths we don’t anticipate any problems with this step up to a level-weights Group 1; indeed, he’s Timeform top-rated for this race. If he, and compatriot Wandjina, are as good as they’ve appeared, leading Home Islands challengers like Gordon Lord Byron and Mustajeeb shouldn’t be too much of a problem to overcome.
Next best: Postponed – 15:40 Royal Ascot
It feels as though Telescope has gone from usurper to old guard in double-quick time, probably because it took him so long to arrive in the first place. The fact is that he came up short against the best last year and we see no obvious reason for him to improve by a significant amount at five. Two four-year-olds against him here, Eagle Top and Postponed, are each arguably as likely to win at the top level. We’re particularly interested in the latter, who hasn’t had a chance to shine over 12 furlongs since he beat Snow Sky in grand style at York last August. A couple of promising spins over 10 furlongs ought to have got Postponed primed for this, a dress rehearsal for the King George next month.
Each-way: Zarwaan – 17:00 Royal Ascot
It’s incredible to think that Zarwaan still has only one win to his name. He’s been relentlessly progressive throughout his career and seems straightforward, yet a maiden at Haydock nearly two years ago remains his sole victory. There has, as you can imagine, been plenty of promise along the way, including a fifth in last year’s Britannia (hampered), sixth in the Lincoln (threatened) and seventh in the Victoria Cup (played earlier than ideal). This will be his first run over six furlongs since Haydock, though if he can take to it- and we’re hopeful- he might finally get the change of luck he deserves.
