Able Friend and Solow
The Queen Anne Stakes has rightly been hailed as the race of the meeting due to the intriguing match-up between two geldings: Hong Kong superstar Able Friend and the prolific winner Solow.
The top-class Able Friend has been successful on his last six outings, winning with plenty in hand on each occasion. He’s undoubtedly one of the best milers in the world, but the big question is can he do it away from Sha Tin?
Solow has been something of a slow-burner but he’s won nine of his last 10 starts – the one defeat coming over two miles, bizarrely – and impressed many onlookers when destroying dual Group 1 winner The Grey Gatsby at Meydan in March. He’s a more solid proposition than Able Friend but will he be able to live with the Hong Kong raider should he arrive in top form?
Make sure you’re watching at 14:30 on Tuesday to find out!
Few sprinters have proved as durable, popular or talented as Sole Power in recent years. And plenty will be hoping that the eight-year-old gelding will be able to further enhance his already-impressive record by completing a King’s Stand hat-trick. Sole Power may be getting on in years, but he’s still blessed with an explosive turn of foot that sets him apart from so many of his rivals, and he seems particularly effective at Ascot where the ground often rides on the quick side. Expect to see Richard Hughes once again sitting confidently with two furlongs to go, preparing to unleash Sole Power’s potent turn of foot.
Limato may have lost his unbeaten record at Haydock last time, but he still remains one of the most exciting prospects on the sprinting scene, and deservedly heads the betting in what looks a red-hot first edition of the Commonwealth Cup. Limato won all four outings last term and signed off for the season with a phenomenally-impressive success in the Two-Year-Old Trophy at Redcar, barely needing to come off the bridle to beat a future Group 2 winner in Mattmu. That performance marked Limato down as the joint-highest-rated juvenile of 2014, and he can confirm the impression that he’s something special by gaining an historic win in the Commonwealth Cup.
