"Everything about Ervedya is either imposing or stylish."
Nap: Ervedya – 16:20 Royal Ascot
To adapt the punchline from that famous Morecambe & Wise sketch, the market in the Coronation Stakes has found all the right horses, though not necessarily in the right order. Found and Lucida are undoubtedly Group 1 fillies, though tucked behind them in the betting is a horse who, come season’s end, might not need her gender as a qualifier.
Everything about Ervedya is either imposing or stylish. On the first point, there’s her physique and breeding, both of which promise progress as her three-year-old season goes on and possibly beyond. In terms of style, there’s her impressive turn of foot to win the French 1000 Guineas last time. Nowadays, sectional times are often used to put some hard numbers behind stylish victories and the clock speaks just as highly of Ervedya as the visuals do. She can clearly handle muddling races, while a well-run mile wouldn’t put us off either (she travels well and is bred for further), so we think Ervedya should be favourite to take this race before taking on the colts later in the season.
Next best: Laxfield Road – 14:30 Royal Ascot
It feels a bit inadequate to call the meeting between Illuminate and Laxfield Road in the Albany a ‘clash’, as on the evidence of their respective debuts it’s doubtful they’ll see much of each other. Laxfield Road basically burnt off her challengers (won by 11 lengths) over four and a half furlongs at Keeneland, while Illuminate got stronger as the race wore on during her own debut at Salisbury. It’s expected that Laxfield Road will go the usual Wesley Ward route- blasting clear from the gates- and it’s simply a question of whether Illuminate and the others can catch her. Judging by the visual impressions and timefigure of her debut, plus the fact that Frankie Dettotri rides, we don’t think they will.
Each-way: Igider – 17:00 Royal Ascot
The Duke of Edinburgh, for older horses over 12 furlongs, is the only handicap of day four at Royal Ascot and, in truth, it wouldn’t be the strongest of the week. It’s still open, but the truly unexposed horses have a greater relative pull. That’s the case with Igider. He’s had five starts, three of them mere punctuation; it’s his last run at three and his latest one that interest us.
Around this time last year, Igider just held off Kleo in a maiden at Windsor. Kleo won her next two starts and finished second in the Dahlia Stakes in April, while the third and fourth are now Timeform-rated 106 and 110 respectively. Following a forgivable reappearance (blocked off), he then won by five lengths against a group of exposed types at Doncaster. He’s gone up 9 lb for that, but there’s surely more to come from one so well-bred and unexposed.
