O'BRIEN AND MOORE TAKE TOP TRAINER AND JOCKEY TITLESDuke of Cambridge Stakes: runner-by-runner guide
Posted in: Royal Ascot Tips
1. Saffron Beach (Jane Chapple-Hyam/ William Buick)
Runner-up in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket last May and enjoyed her finest hour back on the Rowley Mile in October, winning the Sun Chariot by three lengths from Mother Earth. Not discredited in Meydan earlier this year and should be primed for a big run.
2. Sibila Spain (Christopher Head/ Aurelien Lemaitre)
Likeable filly who eked out a bit more under a change of tactics when scoring in the Prix du Muguet at Saint-Cloud in May. This track should suit her, so there could be further progress on the cards.
3. Bashkirova (William Haggas/ Tom Marquand)
Came a long way in a short space of time at three, winning her first three starts, and resumed progress when comfortably landing the Princess Elizabeth Stakes at the Derby meeting. Type to do better still.
4. Kennella (Nicholas Caullery/ Mickael Barzalona)
Smart performer when on her game, but has a bit to find and her reappearance in a listed event at Longchamp was a touch underwhelming.
5. Mother Earth (Aidan O'Brien/ Ryan Moore)
Last year's 1000 Guineas winner who resumed with a comfortable victory in the Park Express Stakes at the Curragh. Folded tamely in the Lockinge at Newbury last time but, given her overall profile, she's likely to bounce back.
6. Novemba (Peter Schiergen/ Sibylle Vogt)
German Guineas winner last season and, while she failed to fire at Baden-Baden last time, she might have needed the run. She's dangerous if allowed her own way in front.
7. Primo Bacio (Ed Walker/ Richard Kingscote)
Smart filly at her best but she ended last term with a modest ninth in the Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket and disappointed when last of six in a listed event at Goodwood on her return. Has a bit to prove.
8. Thunder Beauty (David O'Meara/ Daniel Tudhope)
Useful filly who wasn't discredited when fourth of seven to Pearls Galore in the Lanwades Stud Stakes at the Curragh last time. Likely to be outclassed in this, though.
Timeform Analyst Verdict
A tightly-knit affair that could go the way of the improving Bashkirova provided she's not undone by a relatively quick turnaround. She was impressive at Epsom last time and could take another step forward to get the better of Saffron Beach and Mother Earth. French-raider Sibila Spain also arrives on the up and warrants respect.
1. Bashkirova
2. Saffron Beach
3. Mother Earth
