Five absentees due to the ground meant this was the smallest field for the Duke of Edinburgh since 2007 and it was atypical in a couple of other ways as well, the usual advantage enjoyed by high-drawn horses seeming absent, with perhaps too many of them trying to get a prominent position and getting stuck wide, the winner the first 7-y-o to even make the first 3 since 2000, only 3 as old as 6 yrs having been placed in the meantime; perhaps, then, the race wasn't so competitive as it might have been, but the second and third were unexposed 4-y-os who looked on good marks and the 3 finished clear, so it would be unwise to talk the form down too much.
