It’s extremely rare for a race like the Britannia to revolve around one horse, but in a field of 28 lightly-raced 3-y-os all eyes were on Turgenev and his jockey Frankie Dettori, who’d won the previous 4 races on the card, the former playing his part in the drama here, making the 5-timer look a strong possibilty for much of the contest, Turgenev tanking along in a share of the lead before taking the best part of 3 lengths out of the field at the 2f pole, seemingly having everything on the stretch at that stage, Dettori continuing to get a great tune out of his mount all the way to the line, just outstayed in the end by one who come from the clouds, a thrilling finish, though it must be said there were no shortage of disappointments in behind, the gallop they went having many cooked a long way out - making the runner-up's performance all the more remarkable -, while the 9 that raced in the smaller group towards the centre seemed at a disadvantage, only one horse from that contingent making it into the first 5 home.
