With only 7 runners there was always the possibility that this would prove to be something of a tactical affair and it did develop that way, Richard Hughes keen to get to the front on Night of Thunder and setting an ordinary pace until quickening early in the straight, and a prominent position was an advantage even though it actually only made a difference to the minor placings, Kingman's vast ability meaning he was able to win easily despite being placed further back than ideal; behind the winner they finished quite tightly grouped and the relative proximity of Outstrip and rank outsiders Yuften/Prince of All holds down the bare form, but the winner is value for a lot more and War Command deserves some extra credit too.
