In every year since Henrythenavigator was successful in 2007 the Coventry winner has gone on to be successful in Group 1 company later in their respective careers, amongst them some top-class horses like Canford Cliffs and Dawn Approach, but this year it didn't look quite so strong beforehand, the pre-race ratings relatively low and tightly knit – five of them were split by just 5 lb – and even though it was won quite impressively it's not form that rates as highly as many recent renewals, a heaped finish behind the winner, with little more than 3 lengths separating second and eleventh, reason itself not to go overboard on the bare form; they didn't crawl but neither was the early pace strong and it seemed to be some advantage to race prominently, 3 of the first 4 always leading/close up, whilst there was a bit of trouble amongst those further back shortly after passing the 2f pole.
