Outside of the Guineas, and its foreign equivalents, the St James's Palace Stakes is Europe's premier race for 3-y-o milers and, with the winners of the English, French and Irish classics in the line-up, together with other colts who'd played a part in one or more of those, the latest renewal drew a thoroughly representative field; that point made, matters panned out into a tactical affair, the pace to the home straight no more than a fair one and, for all the winner did well to come from last going into the home turn, it won't be the greatest surprise if the bare form proves less than reliable; even so, the race was still a triumph for Aidan O'Brien, who saddled the first 3 home.
