The two hundredth and sixth Royal Ascot got under way with a new stand and the course redeveloped (widened in places, the straight track replaced and crosspaths removed) amid much fanfare; whilst there was much to celebrate at all of that, it's hardly likely that the first race to grace Britain's showcase Flat meeting at its reopening will be remembered long in years to come; numerically, the latest renewal of the Coventry might have drawn its biggest field on record but, in terms of quality, for all 3 of the leading form contenders duly filled the first 3 places and, whilst acknowledging that they pretty much represent the best juvenile form so far, it's hard to think that there were any potential stars on show, with approximately 8l separating the first 15 to finish!; 3 groups soon became 2, those drawn in the 3 highest stalls racing alone down the centre, the remainder bunching towards the stand side.
