Named after the spouse of King George V, the Queen Mary Stakes was first run at Royal Ascot back in 1921 with Wild Mint winning the race that year.
Initially classed as a Group 3 race when the current grading system was introduced in 1971 it gained Group 2 status in 2004. It’s a flat race over a distance of 5 furlongs and is open to two year old fillies.
Sir Gordon Richards still holds the record for most wins by a jockey with five (1932, 1933, 1934, 1939 and 1946) whilst Frankie Dettori has enjoyed recent success with victories in 2016, 2019 and 2020 and will be looking to beat Richards record.
