The Duke of Cambridge Stakes is one of Royal Ascot’s newer races, established in 2004 as the Windsor Forest Stakes before taking its present title in 2013.
The race is for older fillies and mares who would otherwise have to run against the best older male milers in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes on the first day of the meeting. However, several Duke of Cambridge Stakes winners have also been successful at the top level during their careers, including against males. The 2005 winner Peeress won the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury the following year, while the 2006 winner Soviet Song was a former winner of the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood.
Two fillies, Nannina and Qemah, have won the Duke of Cambridge Stakes after being successful in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot the year before. Peeress, Nannina, Spacious and Integral have all won the Duke of Cambridge Stakes in the colours of Cheveley Park Stud. There have been three French-trained winners of the Duke of Cambridge Stakes: Sabana Perdida (2008), Usherette (2016) and Qemah (2017).
The leading trainer in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes is Sir Michael Stoute, with four winners. Stoute’s four winners were Favourable Terms (2004), Peeress (2005), Strawberrydaiquiri (2010) and Integral (2014).
The leading jockeys in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes are William Buick, Wayne Lordan and Ryan Moore, with two winners apiece. William Buick’s two winners in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes were Joviality (2012) and Aljazzi (2018). Wayne Lordan’s two winners in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes were Lolly For Dolly (2011) and Duntle (2013). Ryan Moore’s two winners in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes were Strawberrydaiquiri (2010) and Integral (2014).
