Coventry Stakes 2022 Racecard

The Coventry Stakes, a race for two-year-olds and run over six furlongs is one of the premier juvenile sprints of the Flat season.

3:05 Tue 14 Jun COVENTRY STAKES

Distance: 6f 0y Age: 2yo O Prize: £88,800 Going: Good to Firm (Good in places)

Analyst's Verdict

Aidan O'Brien has won this a record 9 times and holds a strong hand once again with BLACKBEARD and Age of Kings, who both looked smart prospects when scoring last-time out. The latter was very strong at the finish at the Curragh 2 weeks ago but Blackbeard seems to have more natural pace having displayed an impressive turn of foot in the Marble Hill Stakes there, so gets the vote. Persian Force looks best of the home team, with Bradsell, Remarkable Force and Royal Scotsman also worth a mention.

jockey silks 1. AGE OF KINGS (IRE)
J: Frankie Dettori
T: Aidan O'Brien, Ireland
2
9-3
1,100,000gns Kingman yearling who showed definite signs of greenness when denied on the nod by one with the benefit of previous experience at Naas on debut. Duly left that well behind when powering away in novice at the Curragh 2 weeks ago and looks another serious contender for Aidan O'Brien.
2
jockey silks 2. BLACKBEARD (IRE)
J: Ryan Moore
T: Aidan O'Brien, Ireland
2
9-3
No Nay Never colt who has progressed with each start, making it 3 from 3 when making all in impressive fashion in Group 3 (6f) at the Curragh last month, forging clear. 6f at Ascot ought to be right up his street and sure to make a bold bid for yard that has won this a record 9 times.
3
jockey silks 3. BRADSELL
J: Hollie Doyle
T: Archie Watson
2
9-3
12,000 gns yearling, £47,000 2-y-o, Tasleet colt. Already looks a bargain buy having justified market confidence in the style of a fine prospect when a 9-length winner at York on debut last month, recording an excellent timefigure in the process. Must be considered.
4
jockey silks 4. HARRY TIME (IRE)
J: L. F. Roche
T: M. D. O'Callaghan, Ireland
2
9-3
£32,000 yearling, 82,000 gns 2-y-o, Harry Angel colt. Bred to be precocious and looked a good prospect as he justified strong support in Navan maiden on debut last month. Bare form looks very ordinary, however.
5
jockey silks 5. HOLGUIN
J: David Probert
T: Andrew Balding
2
9-3
Pretty professional for a debutant when making a winning start at Newbury but was readily brushed aside by Persian Force there next time and no obvious reason why he should beat that one here.
6
jockey silks 6. KING'S CROWN (IRE)
J: Barry McHugh
T: Adrian Nicholls
2
9-3
Put experience to good use when off the mark at the fourth attempt in Thirsk maiden 2 weeks ago but out of his depth here.
7
jockey silks 7. LAKOTA BLUE
J: Faye McManoman
T: Nigel Tinkler
2
9-3
30,000 gns foal, 42,000 gns yearling, Sioux Nation colt. All the better for debut when 1½ lengths second to Scholarship in maiden at Haydock (6f, good, 100/1) 19 days ago, nearest finish, but this looks very ambitious.
8
jockey silks 8. LATE SEPTEMBER (USA)
J: C. T. Keane
T: George R. Arnold II, USA
2
9-3
US-raider who showed much-improved form to get off the mark at the second attempt in 6-runner maiden at Churchill Downs (4.5f) last month, reeling in the 2 pacesetters late on, but this is a tough ask running on turf for the first time.
9
jockey silks 9. PADDY'S DAY (IRE)
J: Kieran Shoemark
T: Charles Hills
2
9-3
€52,000 foal, €68,000 yearling, Starspangledbanner colt. Knew his job when making a winning start in a novice full of newcomers at Windsor 3 weeks ago, breaking fast and making all. Much more needed here.
10
jockey silks 10. PERSIAN FORCE (IRE)
J: Rossa Ryan
T: Richard Hannon
2
9-3
€225,000 yearling by Mehmas. Ran to a useful level straightaway when justifying strong market confidence in the Brocklesby at Doncaster and had little difficulty beating Holguin in 3-runner novice at Newbury last month. High on the shortlist.
11
jockey silks 11. REMARKABLE FORCE (IRE)
J: Silvestre De Sousa
T: Alice Haynes
2
9-3
£60,000Y, £140,000 2-y-o by Acclamation. Asserted late when making a winning start at Salisbury and followed up in a class 2 at Musselburgh a little more than a week on, showing useful form and recording a very good timefigure in the process. Looks a powerful colt who should continue to progress.
12
jockey silks 12. ROUSING ENCORE (IRE)
J: Oisin James Orr
T: Richard Fahey
2
9-3
32,000 gns yearling, Acclamation colt. Has improved a chunk with each run, much better for debut when scoring at Beverley before following up in decisive fashion in class 2 at Pontefract, beating a couple of previous winners. Worth a shot.
13
jockey silks 13. ROYAL SCOTSMAN (IRE)
J: Jim Crowley
T: Paul & Oliver Cole
2
9-3
Confirmed debut promise (fourth in what was a very hot novice here) when an impressive 5-length winner at Goodwood (6f) last month. More to come and not taken lightly.
14
jockey silks 14. SCHOLARSHIP (IRE)
J: Adam Kirby
T: Clive Cox
2
9-3
€44,000 foal, 60,000 gns yearling, Profitable colt. Looked another good juvenile prospect in recent times for this yard when ready winner of a Newbury maiden 19 days ago. Bare form looks ordinary but may improve quite a bit.
15
jockey silks 15. SHOW RESPECT (IRE)
J: Sean Levey
T: Brian Meehan
2
9-3
Showcasing colt who left debut run well behind when scoring in maiden at Leicester 2 weeks ago, impressing with his strength at the finish. Much more on his plate here but has potential.
16
jockey silks 16. TI SENTO (IRE)
J: R. P. Whelan
T: Adrian McGuinness, Ireland
2
9-3
Left debut well behind when winning at a huge price 8 days on in a Listowel maiden last week, no fluke about it given the clear margin at the line. Others have more convincing profiles, though.
17
jockey silks 17. WAITING ALL NIGHT
J: James Doyle
T: Richard Spencer
2
9-3
Made a winning debut in maiden at Wolverhampton, becoming the first winner for a sire who won this race for these connections in 2017. However, found out at listed level at Sandown next time and this even harder.

Betting Forecast : 10/3 3.33 BLACKBEARD, 7/2 3.5 PERSIAN FORCE, 17/2 8.5 AGE OF KINGS, 11/1 11 ROYAL SCOTSMAN, 12/1 12 BRADSELL, 22/1 22 ROUSING ENCORE, 22/1 22 REMARKABLE FORCE, 25/1 25 HARRY TIME, 28/1 28 PADDY's DAY, 28/1 28 SCHOLARSHIP, 33/1 33 LATE SEPTEMBER, 40/1 40 HOLGUIN, 40/1 40 SHOW RESPECT, 50/1 50 TI SENTO, 150/1 150 WAITING ALL NIGHT, 150/1 150 KING's CROWN, 150/1 150 LAKOTA BLUE

The event was established in 1890, and was named after the ninth Earl of Coventry, who served as the Master of the Buckhounds at that time.

The race was initially installed at Group 3 status, but was upgraded to a Group 2 in 2004, where the John Gosden-trained Iceman, ridden by Kieren Fallon prevailed.

The Coventry Stakes sees the leading two-year-olds from the UK and Ireland line up in what is usually an ultra-competitive contest and has a habit of throwing up a star of the future, with the likes of Canford Cliffs (2009), Dawn Approach (2012) and Caravaggio (2016) all winning the race this century.

For decades, the winner of this race has been regarded as one of the leading two-year-olds and it's not a shock to see them competing in Classic company the following season, most likely to feature in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket. Dawn Approach was the last horse to complete the double, while Canford Cliffs emulated Henrythenavigator by landing the Irish equivalent, providing jockey Richard Hughes with a first Classic success.
