O'BRIEN AND MOORE TAKE TOP TRAINER AND JOCKEY TITLESStoute aiming for slice of Royal Ascot history with famous five
Posted in: Royal Ascot News
Sir Michael Stoute, who began training horses on his own in 1972, was knighted in 1998 for services to tourism in Barbados and has been Champion Trainer ten times.
He and the late Sir Henry Cecil currently hold the record with 75 Royal Ascot successes apiece, and Stoute - who trained HRH The Queen's horse Estimate to win the Gold Cup in 2013 - has five entries.
Here are his five entries on Wednesday, along with the Timeform view of each runner:
2:30 JERSEY STAKES (Group 3) TAAMOL
Improved when winning 6-runner listed race at Newmarket last time by head from Larchmont Lad, travelling well, edging left under 2f out and holding on gamely. Connections won that race with Thikriyaat 12 months ago, who went on to finish second in the Jersey, so not discounted with cheekpieces added here.
3:40 DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE STAKES (Group 2) SMART CALL
South African recruit who shaped encouragingly after 16 months off when 1½ lengths third of 4 to Blond Me in Middleton Stakes at York last time, disadvantaged by run of the race and likely to be sharper for the run. Multople Grade 1 winner in the past and an interesting contender here.
4:20 PRINCE OF WALES'S STAKES (Group 1) ULYSSES
Won two of six starts as a three-year-old in 2016, including the Gordon Stakes at Goodwood in July, and signed off with an improved fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Santa Anita in November. Better than ever when making a successful return in the Gordon Richards Stakes at Sandown (by a length from Deauville) in April, overcoming unfavourable circumstances to score convincingly, and should have more to offer for trainer that has excelled with similar types.
4:20 PRINCE OF WALES'S STAKES (Group 1) QUEEN'S TRUST
Attractive filly who progressed right through her three-year-old season, winning Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Santa Anita (by a nose from Lady Eli) in November. Needed the run on return at York last month and should prove capable of better here, though more needed to trouble the best males.
Asc 5:00 ROYAL HUNT CUP (HERITAGE HANDICAP) BALLET CONCERTO
Wn handicap at Doncaster in April, and better than result when 4¾ lengths sixth of 7 to Sovereign Debt in Diomed Stakes at Epsom last time, badly hampered 2f out. Acts on good to firm going and likely to go well for Ryan Moore.
