O'BRIEN AND MOORE TAKE TOP TRAINER AND JOCKEY TITLESRoyal Ascot 2015: California Chrome On Course For Toughest Challenge
Posted in: Royal Ascot News
California Chrome famously won the first two legs of the American Triple Crown last season - the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes - before finishing a gallant fourth in the Belmont Stakes. He was also a narrowly-beaten third in the Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita, while he added to his significant prize haul when finishing runner-up in the Dubai World Cup on his latest start in March.
Speaking at the Royal Ascot & Global Sprint Challenge media morning in association with Newmarket Racecourses, Coburn said: "This is probably going to be the toughest race of his life. Everything is new to him - the course is new, the running up hill and downhill is new, and so it is going to be tough. He always tries his best - he gives 100 per cent of his heart every time. If this horse come out of the race sound, I will be happy."
Trainer Art Sherman declared: "I get goosebumps just watching this horse and wish I had him to ride when I was a jockey. He is a push-button horse and just a pleasure to be around. We are going to try our best in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes. It is very competitive and we know how tough it is going to be. I am just hoping he can hit the board.
"Victor Espinoza, who has ridden California Chrome, said that we would be better off with a local rider and I am happy with William Buick."
California Chrome is generally available at 10/1 for the Prince of Wales's Stakes, with the market headed by Dermot Weld's exciting, lightly-raced four-year-old Free Eagle.
