O'BRIEN AND MOORE TAKE TOP TRAINER AND JOCKEY TITLESFrankel: First Royal runners
Posted in: Royal Ascot News
On the track Frankel put up his best performance on Timeform ratings (and indeed the best performance ever recorded by a racehorse in Timeform’s history) when winning the 2012 Queen Anne Stakes by 11 lengths from Exelebration, recording a staggering rating of 147.
It looks highly likely that Frankel will continue his high level of success into the breeding shed, too, with a remarkable four from his first five progeny to hit the track making winning starts. Frankel did not run at Royal Ascot as a two-year-old himself, but he looks set to have runners at Royal Ascot 2016 from his very first crop of two-year-olds, with Queen Kindly entered in Friday’s Albany Stakes, and Cunco and Frankuus both entered in Saturday’s Chesham Stakes.
Cunco – trained by John Gosden on behalf of owner/breeders Don Alberto Stable – was the first of Frankel’s runners to hit the track, and created a good impression winning a seven-runner maiden at Newbury by three quarters of a length from Isomer in mid-May, taking some time to warm to his task but growing in confidence and momentum the further he went and eventually winning going away. Cunco is rated 92p after his first start, and is the second-highest rated of Frankel’s five runners on Timeform ratings behind Fair Eva (95P).
Sitting just behind 3/1 joint-favourite Cunco in the market for the Chesham is another of Frankel’s progeny, Frankuus, who is a 5/1-chance. Frankuus (91p) is the most recent of Frankel’s offspring to hit the track, and made his debut for Mark Johnston just last week at Haydock Park. Frankuus made a winning start despite signs of inexperience, both in the preliminaries (green when mounted) and the latter stages of the race, but he is a tall, scopey sort who will only improve with that run under his belt.
Richard Fahey trains Queen Kindly, who is entered in the Albany on Friday and could be the first 'Frankel' to run at the Royal meeting. She is bred to be very speedy, being the first foal of Lady of The Desert, who won the Diadem/Lowther Stakes and was also runner-up in the Sprint Cup and the Prix de l'Abbaye at Longchamp. Queen Kindly overcame early signs of greenness to make an impressive five-length winning start at Catterick in early-June. She was sent off at odds of 2/5, and the race was not a deep one, but Queen Kindly still achieved a Timeform rating of 91p. That leaves her with something to find with current favourite for the Albany, Cuff (102p), but Queen Kindly can only improve, and is a fascinating contender at around 8/1 for Friday’s race.
