Smart Stat: 2 - W. P. Mullins's number of winners in past 10 runnings
Footpad wasn't the best of this field over hurdles but has been transformed for the switch to chasing, winning all three of his starts in Ireland to date - including two Grade 1 races - and, having already beaten Petit Mouchoir, this may well boil down to a match between him and the main English challenger Saint Calvados, jumping likely to decide things. Willie Mullins has won two of the last three renewals and may well continue that excellent record.
Smart Stat: 3 - David Pipe's number of winners in past 10 runnings
David Pipe has won the last two renewals of the Ultima (with Un Temps Pour Tout) and the team will presumably have been glad to see conditions coming up testing for this season's race, with their main hope Ramses de Teillee kept exclusively to soft/heavy ground for his four chasing starts to date. Ramses de Teillee is unexposed and could yet have more to offer (goes with plenty of zest and shapes as though a well-run race over this trip will suit)
Smart Stat: 3 - Gordon Elliott's number of winners in past 10 runnings
Gordon Elliott is very much the trainer to be with when it comes to finding the winner of this race in recent years, and though current favourite Jury Duty is very much respected, Mossback certainly shouldn't be forgotten about. Mossback has improved plenty for the switch to fences this season and ran right up to his best when powering clear of the field with impressive Thyestes winner Monbeg Notorious in a Grade 2 last time. He's bred to relish further than three miles (by Yeats and out of a Bob Back mare) and looks worth chancing with the excellent Lisa O'Neill in the saddle.
