Midnight Midge had been given a chance by the handicapper and duly opened his account over fences on his return to action and debut for this yard over course and distance last month. Admittedly, he was fortunate to do so, headed between the third and second-last but left in front at the last when the leader fell. That rival has come out and won since, though, and Midnight Midge has been left on the same mark. He may have more to offer for Philip Hobbs. 

Hyland - 14:38 Taunton

Smart Stat: £36.83 - Nicky Henderson's profit to a £1 level stake when having only one runner on the card (hurdles)

Hyland recorded his second win over hurdles at Uttoxeter on his final start in May and this lightly-raced sort may have more to offer on his return from seven months off. He was well positioned on that occasion, but he beat a next-time-out winner in the process, and he is only 4 lb higher now. Nicky Henderson remains in form and has a profitable record when having only one runner on the card over hurdles, so he may be the way to go in this small-field event. 

Demi Pointe - 18:30 Chelmsford

Smart Stat: 21% - Roger Varian's strike rate with sprinters 

Demi Pointe is bred to be useful but she looked in need of the experience on her debut at Goodwood back in May and, though that race hasn't really worked out, it does have a rich history of providing above-average types. She hasn't been since, so she has seemingly had some problems, but she represents a top yard who are among the winners and remains with potential. This doesn't look the strongest race of its type and she is a leading player on form.
